Tennessee Pass has always had me curious. What would it have been like up there, to be working in winter as a telegrapher? Such as at Texas Creek. A little bit isolated?

Texas Creek, or Malta, maybe even Pando. Imagine being an operator at the summit, Tennessee Pass? In winter?
I have more TP vids than that of the Moffat Route. Not much exists of my favorite line, video-wise, other than at Moffat Tunnel's East Portal, and at Big Ten eastward. So many videographers visit Big Ten, some visit the main sidings; Plain, Crescent, Cliff, Rollins, Tolland, and up to the Moffat, but very few venture into the Secret Places (boonies) to get video.

Now that you mention Pando- I've been curious. The 10th Mountain Division trained there during WWII. I have a video tape about them. Is there any remnant of that operation still there? Or all gone these days?

Yes, there are some foundations still left (at least the last time I was there) but not forgotten. The entire Ski industry can be traced back to those that trainined there and came back to build the initial ski resorts.

Surely meaning the post WWII version of US ski resorts? As they certainly existed before the war. Including a couple the Milwaukee Road was very involved with out in Washington state.

Yes, I mean the huge boom that started aftre WWII. Here is a quote from one of many web sites about the 10th that go on to talk about their impact on the Skiing industry and the BIG NAME resorts that they started here in Colorado.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

Veterans of the 10th Mountain Division were in a large part responsible for the development of skiing into a big name sport and popular vacation industry after World War II. Ex-soldiers from the 10th laid out ski hills, built ski lodges, designed ski lifts and improved ski equipment. They started ski magazines and opened ski schools. Vail, Aspen, Sugarbush, Crystal Mountain, and Whiteface Mountain are but a few of the ski resorts built by 10th Mountain veterans.

Aren't Vail or Aspen near Minturn?

I added a new DVD to my library:
Machines of Iron--Otto Perry's Moffat Route.

INCREDIBLE footage of D&SL/DNW&P on Rollins Pass, rotaries, 2-6-6-0 mallets, opening ceremonies of Moffat Tunnel, Rio Grande big steam--3600's, early diesels, lots of 4-8-4's and Mountain-types, plenty of pasenger action, the most modern stuff is a GP30 set... ...When they were new!
I HIGHLY recommend this vid to any 'Grande nut, or any steam junkie. The footage of ops on Rollins Pass is very, very rare, and priceless.

Aspen is roughly 35 miles southwest of Minturn.
