    Hello,
Can anyone tell me when UP finished repainting the MKT units? I am guessing sometime in '90 as I've seen photos dated late '89, some with multiple Katy units. From my memory, it seems like they just all of a sudden disappeared one day so I'm having trouble coming up with an answer. Miss Katy (OKT) not only ran through my hometown but also had trackage rights on the FW&D (BN) which I model and which also ran through my hometown. (I'll let you Katy fans figure out where I lived) So, in setting a time period for my layout I want to make it conceivable that a Katy GP38-2 or SD40-2 ran through on a UP extra. Right now I'm looking at 89-97, which covers BN's Tiger Striped SD60's and fuel tenders, MKT units, and all the way up to Heritege II Dash 9's. Thanks in advance for your help and happy railroading!

Hey Doug, welcome to the board! I can't answer your question, but I'm sure some one else will, so I'll move this topic up to the top. [IMG]

UP 1325 Ex MKT 53 was the last MKT repainted into UP. Happened 25 November 1993.

    The MKT GP38AC were all repainted 4Jan89-2Jan91. GP38-2 #318-321 r/p Jan-May 90,

The 1st unit to be repainted was Gp38-2 #315 to UP#2346 dated Nov 88.

    The last SD40-2 was #636 repainted to UP 3843 13 Nov 90.

    Hope this helps,
    Duane

As a after thought if you went with Jan-Mar of 90 you could have a few MKT's running around. Perhaps a local with a MKT GP38-2 and a "new" UP GP38-2 former MKT
GP-38-2. They could meet a road train with the UP standard SD 40-2s, however 1 could be the MKT 636.

Don't worry too much about it, its suppose to be fun too

I model SP/SSW/DRG&W the only UP I run is pool power! Never turn yellow!

    Duane,
I totally agree with you...it's all about fun! But I want to try to be at least somewhat historically accurate as well, as long as it suits me. [IMG] Anyway, if I have a Katy Dash 2 in the hole while a BNSF H-II rockets past, I will calmly explain that it was actually a UP unit that had been tagged by an overzealous MKT fan toting a few cases of Krylon while the train was parked in the same spot for 3 weeks during the great traffic jam of '97. Seriously, thanks for the response and keep those (black) tunnel motors roaring!

So, do the Katy Lines paint their Dash 9's in green and yellow or do they use the retro-red scheme? :D

Now if you're wanting some pure-dee-nasty road power, try modeling one of the ex-ICG GP38s in the tri-color scheme (orange, white and rust). The ex-Conrail stuff they never repainted ain't too bad (except maybe for the ex-Penn Central look), and the ex-Kennecotts are just plain ugly!
I lived in Paris, TX, and driving home to Afton, OK I paralleled the Katy, and saw a lot of interesting paint jobs on the point of trains! I ven got an all Conrail motive power shot between a Katy work train and a southbound freight in Vinita, OK in December 1980 (after the Frisco-BN merger, and while Katy was rebuilding their mainline)- not a Katy engine in sight! It looked for all the world like it was shot in Indiana somewhere.

For the record, there's a guy in Denison, TX who models the Katy and STILL paints the motive power red.
