On Conrail, obviously - I don't care about other railroads for the moment. GP30 - sometime in the 80s? C630 - early 80s? SD45 - no idea U25B - no idea SD9 - no idea
Triplex, I'm no Conrail roster expert...that's a lot to know! Shoot photos first...ask roster questions later! The GP30's were still on the roster in 1990. 2169-2187 2188-2197 2198-2249 I don't think I ever caught a CR GP 30. I'm sorry but I can't give you an exact retire date but I'm sure there are plenty out there that can. C630 -I agree early 80's. Some earlier late 70's. Weren't they a Mingo Junction legacy? SD45 I would also say early to mid 80's. Leaning more toward early 80's. U25B Don't know let's ask these guys... Conrail question & answer SD-9s-Late 70's No later (I think) than 1980. http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=89975 A lot of GP30s among the power on the Altoona deadline in 1989. But certainly not all of them - some got there by http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=27351 July '88, while some http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=75693 were in service as of November '88.
The last GP30 was retired on finally retired in July of 1995. A few of the were brought out of retirement for a few years to help with a power shortage. As well as a handful of GP35`s SD9`s were gone in 1983, SD45`s in 1986, but they sat dead behind Junaita for a few years. Last one I saw in service was 1982. Alcos were mostly, if not all gone in 1979. Cant remember about the U25B`s but it wasnt much past 1981 [ March 19, 2006, 10:13 AM: Message edited by: wlal21 ]
http://railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=48695 November '82 - most U25Bs are in storage. It seems 1960s engines didn't last very long on Conrail. And what about SD35s? Here's one on a deadline in '82: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=81449 But here's one in service in '84: http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=29459
The SD35`s didnt last past the early 80`s either. You have to keep in mind that some of those units were fuel guzzlers, and the poor upkeep that they suffered from their previous owners helped lead them to a speedy end.
SD35s retired in '83 and '84. Information from http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/sd35/sd35.html Great site - everything I could want to know about Conrail engines.
