OH wow! Very cool Photo. A friend of mine had red corvette just like that one. We drove all over the RT 66 in 1970 and I remember his dad chewing him out because he bought a 'RED' one and said he was doomed to get tickets. LOL
Fitz, I'm stumped. The only place I could think of is just outside of Needles but the mountains aren't right. Amboy came to mind but Amboy never had anything like this. There was an older deco style gas station with a small coffee shop and a very small roach hotel. Otherwise Seligman, Arizona comes to mind. Jim, what do you think? Johnny aka Sleeper, I'm betting he got tickets but not because the Vette is red. As to the spur line that runs north, I will have to more research. I have a time table but fear it got packed away when I thought I was moving to Boise, ID.
Johnny, At one point the residents of the mobile home I live in was pretty sure they were going to shut us down when the property management lease came up for renewal. The former lessors didn't renew the lease leaving us speculating the worst. So far the owners are leaving well enough alone. So, I'm digging in and staying put.
Here you go on pic taken yesterday. Former DRG yard in this city on long the California Zephyr route. Good luck.
The only spur I found out on 95 or 93 was line from vegas to boulder. I'll look harder next time. Was it same line they used when they made hoover dam. I ssen something on history channel about this
Stumped on your photo, Jim, but Jason correctly identified the Hackberry General store, on old 66 between Kingman and Seligman.
Jim, The Hoover Dam historians will only account for one railroad that served the dam place. The Union Pacific with a spur off their line in Las Vegas to the dam site. On a map I have of the Santa Fe there is a spur line that runs up toward Henderson. Nothing on it talks about the purpose of the spur line. I've heard stories from Santa Fe employees saying there was shipments that went up the line and later trucked in to the dam site. Claiming that more then one rail line served the dam workers. About now it's all speculation as I wasn't there to see what really happened. I'll see if I can find that map again. And here we are. Second map down. You'll see a hand pointing toward the west away from Grand Canyon and the spur line that came out of Williams. You'll see what appears to be second spur line coming out of K....something or the other. That's what I want to know more about.
Here is that spur line. Sadly, the stories I heard don't match up to the descriptions you can find here: http://www.abandonedrails.com/McConnico_to_Chloride Jim, Pueblo, CO?
There's few such yards, so this must be Denver, North Yard? There's little to go off of, but I think this view is east/southbound. The opposite view would be of the fuel pit, Utah Jct and points west.
Rick, if you're referring to the former D&RGW yard, Pueblo was not on the California Zephyr route. It was on the Royal Gorge route, however.
A quick check says it is NOT North Yard. There's no grade crossing(s) in the area, as seen in Jims photo. I'm tempted to think UT somewhere maybe.
Headed East on Hwy 201, looking south. Headed for either Interstate 15 South or Interstate 80 East in Salt Lake City, UT.
Jim, I think you stumped us. The background or city scape looks like Denver but it's been a long time since I've been in town to visit. Hemi, Agreed on the location of the Royal Gorge Passenger Train. Still think that was one of the prettiest routes for a train to run through. Keith, We will have to wait and see what kind of response we get from Jim. Hey Jim, Where are you? Grin!
Since Keith is about 5000 miles closer to the prototype, I'll go with his assessment. I didn't really look, I simply guessed! Good call!
I didn't see anything looking via Google Earth. The Denver area didn't look right. SLC still didn't look right at first, until I did a Google Street view. Then, a couple of quick spot checks narrowed it down fairly close. Granted, I'm a bit closer, but still 600+ miles away! This one was a interesting challenge though! Figure I'm lucky on this one! Next time, probably not even close! :teeth:
