Opon a search for photos of D&RGW engines with canteens ont he Moffat Route, I came upon this Otto Perry/DPL shot: The caption says: Any know the tunnel number? Most concrete tunnel portals weren't added til the mid-40's.
I think the tunnel numbers were sequential from the first tunnel on the Front Range right up to the pass over the continental divide and then on up the Craig Branch. With a the topography maps, one could probably count the tunnels from some point up the line to Egeria Canyon.
Jim, That works in theory, but don't forget Tunnels 9, 28, 31, 32, 33 and 41 are daylighted. :lightbulb: Tony, that could very well be it, but it seems the track curves the wrong way. Maybe it's the backside of that tunnel on the horseshoe curve side? On second thought, I think I have it narrowed to Tunnel 52 or 54...
It seems that Tony has Rock Creek Canyon, since I cannot find such a horseshoe curve with that tunnel config anywhere else on the Craig Branch. I think it's Tunnel 54's west portal, and an EB train... http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=...,-106.76651&spn=0.0072,0.014462&t=k&z=16&om=1
Yep, I am aware of daylight tunnels. However, they didn't change the tunnel numbers if and when tunnels were day lighted. For example there was a tunnel daylighted just as the mainline dives into the canyon and leaves the plains of Denver behind. I dont' think they changed all the tunnel numbers that came after that tunnel was "removed". So if you see my meaning, you can still use existing higher tunnel numbers to count up, since the tunnel in the picture isn't numbered. And yes, that looks like Rock Creek canyon in the Google Earth picture, not Egeria
True on all accounts. However, if your copy of Google Earth shows all the tunnels in high enough resolution, or shows tunnel numbers, I gotta get myself a copy of it! Tunnel 9 was never finished, collapsed, and was daylighted in 1938, as was old T17.
tunnel number? Let's hope someone who actually runs, or ran, on this section will provide us the answer. Also, it is more than likely an eastbound train since it is Train #2
I'm almost positive it's tunnel 54. Yes, it's an eastbound due to the train number and because the the drop off is on the right side. Definitly would not want to be in a derailment in Egieria or Rock Creek. Along way to the bottom! And yes the photo that Tony posted is Rock Creek.
I gotta see that area someday... Not that many places along the Grande that aren't vertical, till you get to western Colorado!
