Which Controller Runs Both DCC and DC?

    Hi,

I've been wrestling with how to run my mixed fleet of DCC and DC locos in HO.

I thought that maybe having a dual controller setup would let me run either DCC or DC - but not at the same time. That post gave me some good solutions.

However, I've read that Lenz and Zephry controllers will allow you to run either DCC or DC locos - but not at the same time.

What are your thoughts on using one of these controllers instead of separate DCC and DC controllers?

    Thanks again.

Its an unsatisfactory mix. Most simply switch using a master toggle, but it sounds like you already heard some alternatives.

There are two or three DCC controllers that will allow you to run ONE DC loco using the stretched zero bit option. I know the Bachmann EZ Command can but that controller cannot do much of anything with CV changes. I think Digitrax has a controller also. The motor armature will buzz even with the loco stopped. You can still run DCC equipped locos at the same time. It can be rough on some DC loco armatures. Some motors are known to be damaged by this from too much heat at where the brushes contact the armature segments. I have done measurements with an infra red thermometer and it can get a little hot especially with can motors. Open frame motors can dissipate the heat more readily as can a motor that is turning.
Just a WAG, but I think that is what you are asking about.

Actually, Digitrax and Lenz will let you run DCC and DC at the SAME time.

Some people have run DC locos on DCC systems that allow it for years without any problems, while others have reported things like burned up motors. One thing for sure, the locos emit a buzzing sound which is not very pleasant(caused by the constant AC voltage of the DCC signal). Personally, I have a Digitrax Zephyr, which allows for running a DC loco, but it is hooked up through a DPDT switch and when I want to run a DC loco I switch to a DC power pack.

MRC's Tech 6 will let you run either DCC or DC(with the DC actually on DC, instead of the DCC signal), but not at the same time; however, as a DCC system it is very limited. Personally, I would not suggest the Tech 6 but instead getting a real DCC system and a DC power pack and hook them up through a DPDT switch.

If you really want to run DC and DCC at the same time, wire your layout for block control as if it was a DC layout, then make DCC one of the cabs. (Don't use the common rail method unless you really know what you're doing.)

Digitrax systems allow you to run an anolog loco (DC) on DCC by selecting 0 for the address. You can even MU it with a decoder equiped loco, but the running characteristics will not match very well. You should never run them on DCC for long periods of time and never leave them on powered track when not running. They will buzz when DCC power is present, but on my N scale layout it's more of a muted screech. I have only a few locos that I haven't installed decoders (frames need to be milled) and keep them on track in my engine terminal with power switched off with DPDT switches
