I don't think the scarlet or daylight reds look right. What red do you use for painting SP loco ends to match the micro scale decal wings? Also the dark lark grey is kind of light, What grey would look better? Thanks, Loco1999
Most people agree those 3 colors don't match what you would expect. I haven't done any SP engines/passenger equipment myself. Without resorting to custom formulas, some people prefer the Badger colors for the SP colors.
I use just close for all those colors except Daylight Red. Since I don't run passenger trains... For Espee scarlet, I rely on the weathering to match the decal with the paint. OTOH, I have seen modelers double up the decal to make it match the paint. Looks better, but not a critical issue to me in N scale. Also, I have see the "wings" masked and painted. That was too much for me. Some of the Espee historical groups have definite opinions about this, and those opinions vary. How about Rick Blanchard's website? http://www.urbaneagle.com/sp/ http://www.urbaneagle.com/sp/sp-bloodynosecolors.html
I have tried caboose red. Didn't match too well. IMHO, the scarlets are better with Micro Scale decals.
Loco1999: Try mixing a small amount of dark gray in with the SP gray. That should darken it somewhat. Stay cool and run steam.....
BTW, there is an Espee Lark dark grey and an Espee Lark light grey. The bloody nose scheme uses the Espee Lark dark Grey.
Thanks, I used the dark lark grey and it is much lighter than a factory paint. I think I will try the model flex dark lark grey and scarlet red. Where can I order some modelflex? Thanks, Loco1999
