Ive seen some strange paint jobs but why would anyone pay money for a brass loco and then do this? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ajin-Gec-Dash-8-Diesel-Locomotive_W0QQitemZ6038641573QQcategoryZ97170QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem paul
My guess is he had the money to buy an engine he liked, and wanted the paint job to suit himself. Its his engine, so it doesn't embarrass me if that is what he wants. If we don't happen to like it, we could always buy it from him and change it to suit what we feel it should be.
I'm not sure that the shell is brass. The listing talks about the Ajin chassis, but the heading is for a Dash 8. That shell looks a lot more like an SD60 to me. Could be a RailPower shell on a brass chassis. Pat
yes, looking at the shell it looks like plastic on a brass chassis. surely tat isnt a real color scheme? paul
He has two models confused, he is (was? Can't see the other one listed) selling a C40-8 and an SD60 and has obviously got them in the wrong box at some point. My take is that they are RPP shells on Ajin chassis as well. As to why? Erm.........
The USAF has several switcher engines for use on air force bases supplied by rail lines... And they were all painted in a solid dark blue scheme with white lettering. No roundels on them either. I think the roundels are used only on aircraft. Though I think I remember reading if Ronald Reagan's proposal back in the 1980s to put Peacekeeper ICBMs (the MX missile) on railcars had been done, it would have used regular road locos in nondescript paintschemes. Would have looked interesting! [ February 24, 2006, 10:18 AM: Message edited by: LongIslandTom ]
... whimsey... The painter might have had a specific connection with the Air Force... the paint scheme might have been specific to a wing or group... the paint scheme kinda reminds me of schemes used in the late fifties through early sixties for Materials and Logistics commands...
From memory the other similar loco offered was in the same colours but with UP decals - my take is that he just made them up.
