<font color="336633">Why do we like the BN so much?? maybe its their motive power over the last 25 years, in the first 15 the BN had a massive variaty in locos and also some unique ones as well, for expamle they was the last class 1 to run FT's although for only less than a year, F3/F7/F9A's and B's ran up until the early 80's, BN had a huge fleet of Alco power from an RS1 to C636's and almost everything inbetween. the unique locos SDP40's and apart form 1 until all the NW5's built went to GN and into BN, even Alco FA1's and 2's Ran on the BN. maybe its because of the way they pushed forward with loco development and inovations, such as AC power, CNG fueled locos, not forgetting freightcars like the Trough Train. it could be the Paint.. something about the Cascade green and black locos up in the north west just looked "right", things got even better in 1980 when they started to repaint Frisco units.. (only joking charlie! ), even after the merger the paint on BNSF has followed the BN Family tree. maybe its the huge variation of Railroading that the BN has had from the coal fields of the powder river to the rolling hills of the branch lines of the former Oregon Electric, and the Cascade mountian passes of Stampede and Stevens. although we may not often see 5 BN SD40-2's on the point of a train again the Burlington Northern will live with us for ever </font> ------------------ Matthew wheres all the C636's???? stickymonk.com Matts Photo gallery TrainBoard member #257
I have loved the BN ever since i was a kid playing on my dad's train set.My brother and i used to fight over the engines we would be on and i always got the BN units.And now after growing up(very little) I still love the BN units.I model n scale(Which most of you know).And almost my entire roster is BN or BNSF.For some reason I can't get enough of it. I like the many lease locomotives they run.And for some reason the big green and black engines just look good also.I work for the Numb Skull railroad,and it seems anytime a bn unit comes through i have to get on it.I have aquired lots of really neat stuff over four years of being on the railroad. I haven't really sat back and thought why I love the BN. I began modelling it many years back because all you could find Downunder in plastic RTR, or in modellers for that fact, was UP, SF, and SP generally. Some Eastern roads showed up as well. So I began modelling the Green Machines as something different. I've loved them ever since and, as Matt said, the variety of locomotives and rolling stock over their 25 years history has been as interesting as varied. ------------------ Gary A. I've always been a Santa Fe fan, but I have always liked the CB&Q. Once the BN came into being, I just fell in with it. I've always keep current as I've modeled railways so the BN merger was no big deal to me, just as the ICG and Amtrak conglomerents that came along. I also liked the Jolly Green Giants. Cascade and Black looks nice and Railroadie to me. Althought I still favor Warbonnets and Blue and Yellow! After a few years, the Frisco joined the BN, I also liked the Frisco, so it again was cool with me. Then the really big merger came along in 95! WOW! At first I was enraged! It was my understanding that all the Warbonnets would be painted Cascade! NO WAY, NO HOW! Well, we all know what happened, the Warbonnets are disappearing, but so are the Jolly Greens. Besides, as many of you know, I always thought the BN and SF railways would eventually get together. It's the way I've been modeling for years before the merger even happened, I just didn't invision the Heritage Paint jobs. So I guess the order of favorites for me is: Santa Fe, Burlington Northern, the family of railways that make up the BN and finally, BNSF. Ed, one of the beauty's of using UBB boards is that you can use html in your post to do just about whatever you want... When i started picking up html a few years ago one of my pasttimes on a big UBB car board was making marquees...
Almost every summer till I was 14 my faimly would driev over Seven Pass to go camping sevral time. I guess Living in Western Wa. there was nothing else for me to fall in love with. I regreat not getting out to see the BN in it's last years but with out a car then There was nothing I could do, Now that I am old enough to drive all of the trains I see around here are covered with Ornge and green. IMHO there is nothing better than SD40-2's, B30-7A's, or Tiger Striped GP50's leading intermaodal over Stevens pass. Long live the Green and Black, at least I can model it. Kevin

I love the Burlington Northern because it was one of the most successful railroads in the nation. It finally completed James J. Hill's dream of connecting Chicago with the Gulf and Pacific Northwest, and seeing the two northwest powerhouses under one name. I grew up with the Burlington Northern in Fargo, ND and now I am scrambling to capture some of the transition and the disappearing Cascade Green. I also have to plug my organization, the Friends of the Burlington Northern Railway. Our annual convention is this June in Fargo/Moorhead. Hope a few of you are members, and to those that aren't, would you like membership info?

IMO, I'd rather BN and Santa Fe stayed separate. Santa Fe was good at fast intermodal, while BN could do unit trains. When BN was running the J.B. Hunt runthrus from Avard (the ATSF-SLSF interchange) to Memphis, they seemed to have a problem dealing with intermodal priority. I'm more used to seeing BN SD40-2s and C30-7s on the point of coal trains and unit grain trains, and Santa Fe blue & yellow hustling pig & stack trains across Kansas.
