    Hi All,
My club has recently been having trouble getting our WiFi devices to attach to the wireless router in one particular venue. Our chief network guy believes the place may have installed a WIPS (wireless intrusion prevention system) that effectively shuts down any WiFi that is not approved.

Anyone else have this issue, how did you solve it and is there any other way to control JMRI without wires? Bluetooth (not deadrail or IR perhaps? We don't really want to go to a radio based system like NCE or Digitrax, because of the cost. Any thoughts?

So, at that venue you are using someone else's wifi system and their computer to host JMRI?

I have an old laptop, and an old router and plug it in and away we go.

So, I would recommend having an independent setup you take with you.

Greg, I take it that ntrakshooter is using his own router

WIPS is security measure that prevents unauthorised access points from operating. The idea is to prevent a rogue access point from operating that could potentially allow (for example) an employee to inadvertently connect their device to the rogue access point - thus creating a security breach.

As to how ntrakshooter overcomes this problem (assuming WIPS is the cause) I'm not sure...

We'll have to have the OP clarify:

"the place may have installed a WIPS" implied to me that it was not their router,

and also the phrase: "in one particular venue" implied to me it was not his home base nor his equipment.

The convention center where we do the Greenberg train shows is the venue in question and the WiFi I'm using is our own gear that works perfectly at home.

During the last two shows we have done, our wireless router will not let our phones stay connected for more than a minute. That makes running trains difficult. We get authentification errors and we get booted off the router frequently. The router does not broadcast and we have a password set.

The rest of the system past the router works great, NCE SB5, tethered throttles, JMRI, etc. Just looking to see if anyone else has had this problem or found a solution.
