Since I'm asking a generic question about locomotives and not a specific roadname, I'm hoping I have this posted in the right section. I've heard about them, I've seen small model railroad versions of them, but honestly, What are winterization hatches? And does anyone have any examples of them on an actual locomotive?
A winterization hatch has a shutter that diverts the warmer air being blown out by the first radiator fan (which also comes on line first, so it's almost always on as is) into the egnine compartment to maintain a highwer tmeperature than the compartment would have without one. This is useful in cold climates to prevent the auxilaries on the rear of the prime mover (air compressor, water pump, etc) from freezing up.
So that box on most CP or CN Units that covers the radiator fan is the hatch that keeps it back in the engine? I see now. I've often wondered about those covers. Thank you so much for your information ^^
