I am currently nearing the end of planning my layout and I am trying to decide what controller to use. I am going to be running DC with no plans for DCCifying it. I was wondering what the best older/used controller would be, as I am currently looking at various MRC controllers and I currently have two of the modern Bmann controllers as well as the older Bmann controller (the black controller with AC/DC output and red speed controller) They all work well on my ~2'x3' loop of Bachmann track (and KATO too). I will be operating with flex track and homemade turnouts due to cost restraints. Below is my approximate layout plan - kinda based off of the European AZL display layout. The inner two tracks in the yard will probably be put in later. And don't worry, I will have access to the tunnel for everything within 6" or less of the portals.
How much money do you want to spend? The controllers you have are sufficient for your purpose. But if you want to spend more money then look at the controllers offered by the Model Rectifier Corp. mrc model train transformers
Well, if you’ve got three controllers that work well, do you need more? (‘cause your track plan isn’t showing)
The Bachmann controllers are among the better of the "old" controllers and I still use one on my test track........but having said that a lot depends on what you are going to be running. If I put more than 3 locos on the test track, my controller will heat up and shut down. I agree that you need to look at MRC for replacements. If it was me, I'd be really tempted to get one of these 0001200 TECH 6 HYBRID DC/DCC SYSTEM (modelrectifier.com) I know you said you have no interest in DCC, but it's reaching a point where almost everything is dual-mode, and DC is getting harder to find.
That good for me to hear that my older controller is one of the better older controllers. I have looked at some of the newer MRC controllers, but they have outpriced me by far - my current budget is $50 or less for a controller - however I would pay more if it would be much better. I have contemplated doing DCC or DC/DCC, but then, all my running locomotives (other than one) is older than 25 years old and are still working well enough for me - why spend double for the same operating condition for the locomotives - which has kept me in the DC world.
Your layout attachment did not make it as I can't enlarge it to where I can see it. Can you give us the size (4x8', 3x6', etc.)? There is an MRC power pack on Ebay for about $27 US. If you are happy with what you have that's great........but if you foresee wanting new stuff you are probably better off to "plan ahead". No point in paying for new DC and then turn around and spend more if you change your mind......but only you know whether that might happen or not. I was always DC, and then we moved into a new house, and starting fresh with DCC made things SO much simpler.
My old Tech II is still purring right along... It was my first and only DC controller from 15 years ago when i got into N Scale...

I think as of now, I am either going to get a Tech 2 controller or stick with what I have - based on the fact you have had yours for 15 years, should last me until I switch to something else.
