I have no problem logging on at one PC but at the other PC, despite accepting all cookies from this site, I continue to get the message "cannot read the cookie". Therefore I can't log in from that PC, which would be the primary place from which I communicate.

I am loathe to turn off the security settings and allow the flood of junk... well, let's be blunt, I won't. But am I missing something obvious, i.e. is this a "part behind the keyboard error"?

What are the differences in these two PC as in Operating System, Browser, etc. that might be helpful?

    What flood of junk?

Check the date, time, and time zone settings on the computer.

    Hi George,
Welcome aboard TrainBoard... Hopefully my 2 cents will help... Whatever computer you logon with, a small (non-intrusive on our site) "cookie" can be placed to enable you to be recognized.... if you logon from one computer, then change to another, the "cookies" are not recognizable..... Also, if the "security settings" are not the exact same on each computer, they may trigger a warning or reject on one, whereas they did not on another.

And where exactly are these two computers located? Are the security setups the same on both computers? (My guess on that one is no).

Thanks for the responses and hello to some friends here on the board!

Here is a little more detail about the issue.

I can log in from work. Running XP and IE.

I can't log in from home. Running XP Home Edition and tried both IE and Netscape for this.

Both have broadband and fixed IP addresses.

When I try to login from home, it appears to accept but the next screen says "You are not logged in."

I have explicitly deleted all previous cookies sent from Trainboard (although it told me that there weren't any) and explicitly told IE to allow all cookies from them.

I've also tried to re-register to see if there was a problem re my birth date. The next screen that shows after I do this starts with "Cookie Sent" and then whatever that cookie is. But... when I try to go farther I get a message saying that there is a problem reading the cookies.

Dumb question: Could it be that you can only be logged in at one PC at a time; that is, I have to log out of the work PC in order to log in again from home when I get home?

Oh, BTW, the reference to "junk" in my previous posts is the hundreds if not thousands of cookies, web beacons et al with which other sites try to pollute your PC. Try setting to "ask me first" on cookies sometime and see how many some try to put onto your hard drive. No thanks, I'm on a diet!

    Cheers,
    George

No, that is not it. It must be a setting on your computer. A security setting or something.

Do you have another browser to check with on that machine?

Yes, I have tried the same sequence in Netscape and it doesn't work in the same manner. I tell it to accept the cookies and it doesn't.

To further the confusion, there are some secure sites that require cookies and I have no problem with those.

Very strange. I suggested the following earlier:

Check the date, time, and time zone settings on the computer.

You did not mention if you confirmed that all three were correct. Most of these kinds of problems are answered by one of those three things being incorrect. Is your time set to PM rather than AM, etc.? Carefully check all three of those things.

Go into your profile and make sure you have entered a birthdate also.

Sounds strange but these settings can screw it up.

We will get it figured out for you, we always do. [IMG] [IMG]

I hadn't mentioned the date/time/zone since I had checked it before. But it won't hurt to try again.

I'm also going to log out of the work PC tonight before going home and we'll see if that helps.

Appreciate everyone's patience on this. It's been a long time since I was a technical type guy...

I ran into the same problem a while ago, when I uploaded Secure Suite 5 to keep this ol' woodburner running. Somewhere along the line, I musta activated the firewall in the software, because I also got a "you are not logged in" message.

So my question is this: Do you have a firewall or some sort of security software on your computer? I turned the firewall off on mine, and had no further problems. The pop-up stopper keeps the screen free, and regular purging of the temporary Internet files dunp out unwanted extra files, cookies, and history of visited sites.

ANyway, may help to check out the security settings, and the presence of a firewall that may be TOO restrictive.

Well, today (Friday) I am actually remembering to log off the work PC...

If you hear from me over the weekend, we're good, if it's not until Monday, well...

You don't have to logout of one PC before you login from another. I myself have an active login on several PC's going currently. As the other moderators have posted, I would look very hard at your Security settings on the PC you are having problems with.

It has taken me thirty minutes to get far enough to post this message. I have have to use Norton AntiFreeze repeatedly at every step of the way to get Trainboard to go to the next screen.

I am running on a 56 K moden at 45333 K and a 166 Mhz computer. It's not usually anywhere near this slow zand its only Trainboard. Except for RailImages, swhich appears to be down completely. HELP!

Sorry folks, it's Monday and the result is...

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

    ...

The date/time and time zone are OK, within a minute of the "official time" here.

The firewall is set to allow cookies. Both IE and Netscape (I tried both) are set to allow cookies from Trainboard; and, in fact, the "Cookie Manager" within Netscape has what appears to be the date of birth cookie stored.

And Trainboard understands when I try to login as "umtrr-author" with a deliberately incorrect password! It tells me it's wrong and asks me to try again.

But still no go on the login. I can attempt as many times as I want, there is a pause of several seconds while it "thinks" but the screen that comes back is always the same: "You are not logged in."

I also thought of registering a different name. Nope, that doesn't work either. The top of the screen in which the T's&C's are presented for you to Accept is displaying "Set Cookie" and the text, which I think is odd, but the net result is still the same after clicking Accept: "Sorry, we could not read your birth date information."

I do not have this kind of issue with any other board, secure site, news reader, or online commerce site that I use.

No, turning off or watering down the firewall protection is not an option. Sorry, don't take it personally, but it's not worth the risk. I can't believe that you don't have anyone running a firewall (Norton Personal Firewall to be specific) that hits this board; if that's true I wish them well and hope that the trojan horses they've let in aren't consuming too much of their processor's cycles. (My firewall repulses 10 to 20 of these attacks per day.) I must re-emphasize that every other site that I use has no problem with the firewall settings as they are. This includes other boards, secure sites, news readers, etc.

Other suggestions would be appreciated but I think 1 hour of time over the weekend to try to make this work is enough bandwidth spent... apologies for my obvious frustration on this.

    Well, I'm stumped [IMG]

I've never had your issue nor have I heard of anyone else here having it. It's obviously something about how your home PC is setup but I don't have a clue what it would be. :(

I have never seen this problem before either, and I AM using a firewall, ZoneAlarm, and all I had to do was to in there (in the firewall) allow trainboard persistent cookies, maybe you have to do the same with you Norton firewall?, maybe.
Oh, and I'm running Win2000 and Mozilla

Just an update, or shall I say the lack of one. I still have not been able to get Trainboard going on my home PC (any posts I make are from work).

But in a related development, I find that while Railwire works fine at home, I can't log in to that board at the office!!! The exact same problem-- I can log in as many times as I want, and it accepts, but still says "you are not logged in."

Perhaps this is a message that I should stop posting... well, I've certainly trailed off, anyway. (You can always reach me at the address posted on my website.)

    All for now!

Umtrr-author, I am looking into the possible cause(s) of your problem .

Since you do not allow private messages or e-mail, you will have to continue checking here for information.

I am certainly willing to get to the bottom of the trouble.
