The opening of the truck's "bowl" is smaller than the bolster on the underframe of the car body. I discourage any modification to the underframe bolster. If your trucks are plastic it is possible to carefully drill the hole out larger and still allow the screw to hold it all together.

Don't try to force the truck down with the screw you could strip the inside of the bolster or mash it down (I have done both before). I would suggest a different set of trucks. Not all trucks fit on all rolling stock.

Those are not stock Athearn Trucks. Or, if they are, they aren't what I consider stock for a late model blue box kit.
You either need to shave the bolster off or widen the mounting hole on the truck.

I'd widen the mounting hole personall.

Those do look like Kadee trucks. If so, you will need to shave off the round 'sleeve' on the bolsters for the truck to fit against the bolster itself. The sleeves will not fit into a Kadee truck.

Yeah.. leave the bolster alone.. and enlarge the hole in the truck.. so it fits "around" the bolster. You can see the spacing problem...

    These gaps shouldn't be there..

I'm going to disagree with this. Kadee trucks are metal. The BEST thing to do is to remove the sleeve on the bolster so the Kadee truck can fit snug up to the bolster itself.

Have you also checked the height of the loco couplers? It did look a little low to me.

From my experience.. that bloster "pivot" stabilizes the truck.. if you remove it , the mounting screw becomes the bloster, the truck wil "rattle" and tilt about the screw..

After enlarging the truck hole, you'll probably have to shave a bit off the bolster, so that the screw (and small shim) can "snug" up to the truck.

EDIT: ... and it looks like, a good portion of what the screw "bites" into, IS that bolster pivot..

I've shaved off the bolsters on dozens of Athearn cars. Works fine.

Sometimes you need to especially on old MDC cars, because the trucks will actually be too loose when using the bolster.

well, I would agree, I tried to drill out the hole in the truck, ruined two trucks.. so I shaved off the bolsters - well now I have to wait until I get more trucks! oh well.. N scale anyone?

To be fair, it's fiddly, because you decided to fiddle with new trucks :D!
