Anyone here tried to scratch build any yard slugs. If so have any pictures of them, and any tips on building one?

Well, I wouldn't go so far as to say scratchbuild one. CSX uses what they call an MT-6 for yard slugs in ex-Conrail territory. Basically, they are a chopped down RSD-12 riding on EMD trucks. I have begun assembling some pieces for the kitbash, and I have a few RS-11 shells and some EMD trucks. Now I need an RSD-12 chasis.

Here is a picture of a set (SD38 and MT-6) pushing the hump at Selkirk Yard in Selkirk, NY. Another set stands idling on the escape track.

There's a great kitbash article in the Aug/Sept 2000 Model Railroading for an NS GP40 Slug.

The chassis is scratch built. two P2K Gp9/18 shells are used and the trucks are Athearn. Actually it looks like a pretty serious project.

7600, when'd you make the trip up to Selkirk? Next time you're in the area, let me know. I noticed right away the location (CP-Unionville) and the hump set (although now repainted), 2467/1018.

I have quite a few pics of these if people are interested. I'd have to fire up the scanner, but if you ask, you shall receive.

    Harron,
Sorry friend but I didn't make the trip... These are online sources of photo's I know of and all... So I thought I would copy and paste a few for some help to others that didn't know of the site of www.northeast.railfan.net And being I'm a regular visitor to the site I know of any and all the pictures if need at my finger tips and anyone else's for that matter.. Sorry for the confusion...

And a old version (original version anyway) of the Chessie 138T Here is it when it was originally owned by the Western Maryland and most times durring the time the WM had these they were mothered by BL-2's... Enjoy! :D

What did the Western Maryland start out as?

Harron, couldn't you use SD9 chasis instead of a RSD-12 chasis?

StickyMonk, I like to see you pictures of the slug you made from a GP7.

What would be a good starting point in modeling a slug?

    Donald,
I used an old AHM/Bachmann GP-18 frame and shell cut down and removed the cab and so on and made mine EMD I didn't make any MT classed ones yet. You could cut down a RSD-12 or something ALCO from TYCO and do one up in a dummy version or if you got something decent that runs by TYCO would also work for an MT unit.

The Western Maryland Slug is believed to be a S-2/S-4 or something or other. Just cut down....

Donald, it would have to be an RSD12 chasis because the fuel and air tank housings are still there, to provide extra fuel for the mother. Therefore an SD9 chasis wouldn't work.

Thats partly the reason I used a GP-18... The EMD units didn't have the fuel tanks so.. And Besides that alot easier to model with the walkways separate from the actually hood body so the cutting down process is easier as well and not alot of bashing to do to get the effect... :D And being the ones I customized were IHC actually they had and still have decent motors in them so.. I got powered ones!!! I did however added a little bit more weight! So they pull pretty good. Not bad for old clunkers.. :D I thought they were AHM that sold Bachmann Being I think AHM had their hands into every franchise possible with Rivarossi and I believe Model Power, and Bachmann. Look at the GP-18's carefully. You'll see that the Bachmann and IHC's is the same casting and all... And Model Power was the fact of rolling stock! Same castings on alot of them.... Or just shared molds one of the 2...
