Okay, so this isn't strictly railroad related, but the packing house that was the prototype for Microscale decals 87/60-771, is no more.

I've seen this decal used on lots of layouts, and it was kind of neat to think back on the days as a kid when we would get into orange fights behind the packing house. When I grew up and got married, we moved down the tracks from the packing house, but I still passed it everyday on my way to work, while commuting on the Metrolink, or when I'd drive to my parent's house up the street from it.

The Yorba Orange Growers Association closed in mid-June and I watched it torn down over the summer. The 7.7-acre site sat vacant for just a short time, and now the tilt-up industrial buildings are being lifted. [IMG]

As a result of the closure, Villa Park Orchards Association (also on the decal sheet) is the sole orange packinghouse in Orange County, California. Their historic structure was torn down in 1980 for a residential development, and the association lives on in a non-signed packing house in Orange, near the Metrolink Station.

Gee Ed, are they going to send our orchards to China like most of our other products? When I was out there at Merced I had fresh juice every morning. I like mine "Squoze". [IMG]

Actually, I think most of our citrus is being imported from Chilie. The number one agricultural crop in ORANGE county is nursery stock for the urban sprawl. Number two is strawberries. We do pretty good with avacados too...

Back during the war while I was with the D.K.&S. RR, they packed big wooden barrels of strawberries to make jam and jelly out of. We pulled three or four box cars a day during the season. Man those were good too!
