...at your 1-year-old's birthday, when you can't find the big #1 candle, you quickly grab the #7, cut off the end serif, smooth the edges, grab some cake decorating tubes, custom-match the orangey-yellow color, and paint in the missing outline for a convincing number 1.

Well, as long as it didn't involve duct tape.......................

Nice set of skills to have learned.:thumbs_up:
I have stuck a wick in the bottom of a 2 and flipped it on end to turn it into a 7 before.

I found it. Man, I keep everything. Looks like I cut the base off and welded it to the other end with dripping wax and lopped off part of the 2 to make it look sort of right. The kids did not care. They ate the cake anyway. ;)

    Haha! Excellent. Here's mine:

Note the color matched using cake decorating icing. Was a little tough since I didn't have any pure red. Had to mix yellow with pink and black.

You know you've been kitbashing too long when....

You get to the campground and realize you've forgotten the tent poles. After finding none that will work at LL Bean, you go to Home Depot, buy flexible electrical conduit, PVC cement and couplings, and fabricate your own. (Bar Harbor, Maine, 2010)

    MisterBeasley,
I've use the schedule 40 plastic water pipe. I've got about 40 feet of it all over the apartment. And more projects in the works in the garage. Including a stand for my next layout. (Appleton, WI, 2011) lol

In my part of the world.........it is absolutely impossible to function without duct tape. It is REQUIRED equipment in every pickup :)

Done that too! I was hauling logs one time for my dad when he was on vacation and had a brake line blow on the trailer. It was a Friday and I knew I only had about 15 extra minutes to get to the dump or I was stuck in Eugene, Or for the weekend. I duct taped the brake line up and went to the dump. I fixed the airline Saturday morning.

It didn't look pretty but it got me home safe and sound!

I also used a BIC pen one time to patch a spaghetti line together too! I drove that truck that way for almost a year before the mechanics replaced the line.

Duct tape a/k/a Sooner Chrome (only residents of Oklahoma and Okie State fans would get that crack). One of the two most important tools in any handyman's toolbox. The other is a can of WD40.

If it's supposed to move & doesn't, use the WD40.

If it moves and isn't supposed to, use the duct tape.

I've used duct tape to patch hose leaks, cover worn=out truck seats (cue the Jeff Foxworthy intro), mask off house trim in preparation for painting (too cheap to get painter's tape, and the hardware store was closed, so.....) and seal an air mattress.

As for kitbashing, I've used that term when cooking to describe a creative deviation from a recipe. Somewhere Julia Child is rolling over in her grave..............
