I'm very new to modeling trains. I definately love all the old steam, and that Steam painted in Daylight is just beautiful! Now some diesels have been growing on me and now I find myself trying to find a GP9 (weren't they around during the transition era? which I'm attempting to model...)
Also, I love the looks of the C44-9W - just a massive looking muscle machine!

Well... I'm dating myself, but I actually saw working SP Mikados at the SP Bayshore Rail Yard, near San Francisco, in the 1950's. Saw a lot of steam locos on the dead line at that yard, too.

My favorite all-time SP loco is the GS-4. I just pre-ordered the Lionel SP GS-4 loco and tender. I also like the Mikado. I wish Lionel had made one in the SP road name.

SD45 is the definition of SP in the 2nd generation.

Hmmm, I would think the Tunnel motors would own that distinction They are after all almost exclusivly SP.

Another one of those old threads I have to go back and re-read to make sure I don't post the same thing I did a long time ago.:teeth: Had my photo link to a GS-1 ready to go when I found I already posted it.

I will echo what others have said about the Tunnel Motors. They rock!
The photo is of an Espee Tunnel Motor on a Santa Fe train at Darling, Arizona.

    FAVORITE SP LOCOS

I'm a steam kinda guy. My two favorites are the Mikado and the GS-4 Daylight. I am dating myself... but I actually watched SP Mikados in operation in the 1950's at the SP Bayshore Yard near San Francisco.

I am an O scaler. I ordered the Lionel GS-4 and it's suppose to ship tomorrow!

I wish I did. I was 12 then and my Grandpa was the one who was into trains... he took me with him while he watched. The trains were cool... but they weren't my thing then.

Hi! SP is cool. I like F7s and SD7s the best.

Oh boy. Tough choices. It would be hard to not name 4449, and classmates, for steam. Although I like the flat faced cab forward. Can't think of it's class number right now. Argh!

Diesel? Well, Black Widow paint.... But the Cadillacs, and Tunnel motors will always come into mind.

I have to vote for the SD7s and SD9s. BTW, what was the typical light configuration on the rear of SD9s? I haven't found many clear photos of units from the 1960/70's that confirms. I don't think they had the full package. Was the mounting bracket retained without the lights? Thanks in advance.
