Has anyone come across a nice little North American style Mogul or Prairie? The Mike's and bigger are OK if you have lots of room for larger radius curves, but I'm looking for something smaller (x-4-x, x-6-x) that will run on smaller layouts. Have an RDC and other diesel locos but would like a steamer.
    Lots of good info here.

    Hi Larry,

Micro Trains sold a 2-6-0 Mogul years ago. They sold 3 versions. They were MTL cast bodies on Marklin mechanisms. They are fairly rare and expensive since you can usually only get them on the auction sites. You could buy a Marklin 2-6-0 and "Americanize" the body.

Hi Larry, Think you have a couple of choices here. With these smaller engines track cleaning is really important. Also would recommend a gauge master unit to help keep things going.

1- MTL Mogul - very hard to find and if you do expect to pay around $600-$800. In my opinion the nicest of the list it uses a marklin drive train with a brass MTL Body sadly comes with a 3 pole motor that is not great for slow speed. It can be upgraded to 5 pole but special tool are needed to do it.

2-Marklin D&RG (bumble bee)- another hard to find one and runs around $500- $700. This one is really big size wise, almost safe to say not Z scale. so much so the N scale narrow gauge guys run it.

3-Marklin Casy Jones and diamond special - Casy jones can be found for around $400 and comes with 4 old time passenger cars. The Diamond special is more difficult to get and would think the set would go for $600-$800 both run and look great

4- Marklin NYC&HR 4-6-0 - Still being sold for around $240 and runs great.

Thanks for the info. Guess I will have to wait and settle for a Searails GE 25T (N3) or EMD model 40, that is under development.
I'll keep my ear tot he ground.
