Folks I guess this is the time and place for me to mention that I have been working as a sales representative for PWRS since August 07. While I will be happy to assist folks if you approach me directly for a product such as the Saskatchewan Grain Cars as a rule I do not sell to friends and I consider all of you to be friends virtual or otherwise. In addition I feel it would be inapporpriate to use Trainboard as a marketing venue. While I believe PWRS to be a great vendor in any given set of circumstances you have my word I will endeavor to remain helpful but neutral. I sincerely wish you all the best, Steve Goodenough – The Grey One
??? You don't want to use it as a marketing venue, but that didn't stop you from mentioning that you were a PWRS sales rep, and that you'd be happy to assist if contacted directly. Nor did it stop you from mentioning a specific product ???
This is the funniest GD thread I have read you made my morning... Hello!!!!.. Number one rule.. in sales everyone is your friend!!! Job Discription and title: "Pacific Western Rail Systems is looking for an experienced Telesales Account Rep. You will be responsible for an existing database of our model railroad customers using the most advanced on-line data base computer system in the industry. A knowledge of model railroads and computers are assets. You must be a self starter able to work with little supervision. You will work from home! No commuting - No cold calling! This is a commissioned position with very good earning potential". Best of luck and if things fall through I suppose you'll be back on the boards?
I announced it because my name is listed at the PWRS site. I did not want someone hostile to PWRS to see my name there accuse me of non-disclosure and bias when posting here. Rt 66 - I'm not leaving trainboard and it is the only one I post on. While I am predisposed to posting non-serous / funny / fluff posts I can't see what you are laughing at here. Perhaps I am too naive to perceive the intrinsic humor. Please do enlighten me. Robbman - I base on what I have seen of your posts here you are fully capable of understanding without clarification. That said, offering to assist someone is not the same as offering to sell them something. I am surprised that you would have an issue with that. Yes, I am on commission but that does not mean I would act as the sales rep. I truly felt my reputation here made it unnecessary to point that out.
Turning things from whatever the previous intent of your disclosure got mixed up into... I read this on the PWRS website: "Some of the original goals, such as developing a showcase, interactive layout with a sales point for the public, remain works in progress, and the shareholders of PWRS plan other achievements for the future of model railroading as well." To me it seems to be a goal to get some advertising about the hobby directed to the public, more than the company/product directed to the modelers, which is probably just as good, if not better. In any case, something I have not seen...well..in a long long time, if ever. Do you know anything more about this? Ways others (though not located anywhere near BC) might be able to get involved?
A word of support I think Steve's motives for disclosing his relationship with PWRS are entirely above board and ethical -- indeed, praiseworthy. One way of thinking about ethics is to consider whether you would like everyone to act in the way Steve did -- that is, to disclose what could be seen as a potential conflict of interest. In this light, Steve's action was entirely ethical and, indeed, provides an example for all of us to follow. Steve, I'd like to add my congratulations and warm wishes for success in this exciting new career opportunity! Bryan Pfaffenberger Science, Technology, and Society University of Virginia
Hemi - I'm not sure but I'll look into it. Mystere - I'll find out. Bryan - Thank you. I'll try to live up to your praise.
Yes, best of luck! I am fine with the disclosure. I did the same on another thread way back months ago when I was posting something about an author appearance and book-signing that was taking place at my wife's bookstore, which has obvious connections to my own financial interests (though a little indirect). I thought it best to disclose the relationship than try and conceal it. "Hostile to PWRS" you said? I can't think of why someone would be hostile to PWRS. Now, sometimes I feel hostile to company X, but I tend to keep it between company X, my LHS (if I bought company X's product from them), and myself and give company X a chance to make it right. Usually, I get it sorted out without having to get too much in anyone's face.
great, it must be cool to work at your hobby or hobby your work?? davido after 4507 posts i trust you. "make money on your friends and family, your enemys won't trade with you."
About every 6 months I get a call from a new or different sales person from PWRS. Me, "Why don't you list your prices in the E Mails you send?" PWRS, "Policy" or some such answer. Me, "Are all the prices list?" PWRS, "Yes" Me, "Why would I buy at list when I could go to my local shop and pay list?" PWRS, Answer varies each time, but usually no good answer. Me, " Do you discount off list, and if so, how much?" PWRS, "I will have to ask Dan" No return call from PWRS. 6 months later, the same call and the same no call back. This has been going on for 2 years. Grey One. I hope you return calls even if the news isn't good. Pete S
It strikes me as much more transparent that he did mention it. I imagine many of us would be happy to actually earn some money through our hobby. As long as it is aboveboard, I don't see a problem. Jeff
