Has anyone discovered a place that stocks these kits? You can not go to the item on J'n'J's website and I can not get an answer to e-Mail.

I have not even seen these kits at shows. If anyone knows where to buy some, please let me know.

Decals needed!!! Went to the local hobby shop in Grand Rapids today - not a thing that would work except for the possibility of an HO Champ set - got 'em home, they're too big. Oh well, I have HO projects they can be used on...

I believe that Skipgear and I had a wait of about 9 months...but we did have multiple things on order. I don't know which item kept the order from shipping (presumably back-ordered), but the frustration was certainly there.

This whole phenomenon of "sold out" that we have in our hobby counfounds me. If I didn't know any better, I would think that we were behind the Iron Curtain back in the 70's or 80's.

    Update on the JNJ kits.

I got an e-mail back from Troy today and he is on his 3rd caster, or his new-new caster as he put it. He said he just recieved some test samples of the Milwaukee box cars today and they look good. He sent the B&O molds off to him to start production. I was told to expect the kits some time in mid June.

That's Great! I've been waiting since last May for mine but Troy tells me they're on their way. So where do I sign up for decals please?

Skipgear it keeping track of the "interested people" list. Send him a message and I'm sure he'll put you on the list. If not, drop me a line and I'll make sure you are added.

Oh...and...the proofs passed the inspection. I ran a couple white ones just to see how they looked, and I was impressed. Skipgear is going to check to insure that the decals are not translucent. Hopefully he'll have an opportunity to check this tonight. I'll be doing a check myself tonight, so with a little luck the run can start tomorrow evening. Out the door in the following couple days....should be on modelers' worktables by next weekend or the very first part of next week. Alot of "if"s there, but I'm an eternal optimist. :)

I can do them in Yellow if anyone wants some for a later caboose.

The next project is a metalic set for a B&O passenger consist!

The decal sets are 4-up. That means that there enough for 4 cabooses on a single 8 1/2 x 11 sheet. This includes all the heraldry, data boards, and jumbled numbers sets.

This is what the page looks like (except there are sets on each page).

    First test shots.

Sorry about the fisheye on these, my cameras macro is not that great so I tried shooting them through my desktop magnifier. It worked better than expected.

I have not been saying much up to this point because I didn't want to get anybody's hopes up any more until I had something in hand that was right. I think I have that now. The decals that were "adjusted" to fit the JNJ caboose kit work well and all others are to scale.

These are freshly applied, nothing done to blend the decals yet. The decals were applied as printed, no extra clear coat needed. They were applied using tap water to soften then MicroSet on the car body to float the decal. After dry MicroSol was applied to melt the decal into the body. The pictures were taken just after the MicroSol and evaporated off.

If you are interested in them you can contact me through a Private Message on the board or e-mail me at 'insert my forum name here' @aol.com with the subject "Caboose Decals".

I know there have been more than a few e-mails over the past months as I have been working on these that I may have missed or lost so even if you inquired about them before feel free to remind me.

I'll try to post better pictures in the morning when I can steal my wifes camera. 8mp is a bit better than 2.3mp that this was shot with.

Does your (or skipgear's) programme do passenger style lettering? If so, I suspect that there are more than a few of us who are unhappy at Kato's slighting of us when it issued its RDCs. No one does 'BALTIMORE AND OHIO' in black Railroad Roman passenger style lettering. You can fudge the herald plates that were on the noses of the original seventeen cars from the MicroScale E and F unit sheet. You can fudge the numbers from the black lettered covered hopper sheet. But, there is no correct roadname available for the letterboard.

I do not recall that the cars that B&O purchased used from ATSF had the nose herald plates, but some may have received them. Some of the photographs that I have seen of the ex-ATSF cars show a painted-on yellow Capitol Dome herald, but none show the Blue and Grey Capitol Dome herald plate.

Oh, and nice job on both the caboose and the decal sheet. As soon as I can find some of these kits, I will be ordering decal sheets.

Passenger lettering for the RDC's should be fairly easy. Quite a few of the fonts are available for download on the B&O Historical Society site. Printing black lettering on clear decal paper can be done with any inkjet printer. It just takes a little practice with a graphics program to get the sizing right.

The lettering for this set was done using the fonts available from the society.

A few closer pictures. I'm really amazed that some of this stuff is readable. The small data lettering is .013" high.

I got a chance to see Tony's caboose with applied decals today. Very nice. The opacity exceeds what I had expected.

Overall, the color definition surpasses traditional silkscreen decals. I'm impressed with the ability of the Alps printer to generate decals for model railroaders.

In Tony's bottom picture, the "data" decal is perhaps 2 or 3 mm tall. That's not much. CERTAILY in excess of the ability of my eyesight! (maybe that's just because I'm a little more "mature" now than when I first started modeling!!!)

I sent out E-mails and PM's to those that have contacted me so far. The e-mails went out as a bulk mailing. It may get stuck in a spam filter so check your junk mail. If you haven't gotten anything, e-mail me again and I will reply directly. So far, in roughly one day, I have requests for about 30 sheets.
