Yep, that's the stuff. Kodachrome also has archival qualities that survive the decades with no fade or color shift. My Grandfather shot the PRR Delmarva Ferry Maryland sometime in the late 1930s on Kodachrome and the image as seen here remains perfect. Alas, he wasn't a railfan! You can see the PRR keystone on the stack.
Spotted this former B&O covered hopper on a southbound at Florence, SC yesrerday. Messed up with grafitti, but nice to see the B&O logo still standing proud.
This has me wondering how many other cars are still out there? Folks don't seem to often mention such B&O sightings.
I'm thankful that a friend got me interested in freight car photography. When I was a kid thirsty to put anything railroad on film, I shot a few freight cars like RBOX 10367, taken about 1975 still glistening in fresh paint. When I think about Railbox, I think of the original 10000-series cars. And here's the modern version taken a few years ago in Dillon, SC: Ugh!
I was looking at some of my old low-rez scans and remembered that even as late as 1985, CofG boxcars adorned in original paint were still roaming the rails. I shot this in Selma, AL I think.
I found another that I didn't originally save, from Mt. Rainier Scenic in 2012. Must have been cold in May there, as Polson Logging 70 is making a lot of steam.
The reason I went back to the MRSR in 2012 is because Jim Gertz was there to witness his Rayonier Willamette run once again. Jim died today, a real loss to railfans in the northwest.
Yes. I'd heard about Jim's passing. I don't know anyone who ever said a bad word about him. A big loss for Olympic Peninsula and logging/steam fans out there.
Actually, no. It does vaguely give a reminder, but is quite different. I sure miss seeing those colors. Used to watch them from school every day, and more.
Fun with photo shop. The UPS logo looks to be cloned from the trailer to the side of the loco. The color of the engine may have been altered too.
Nice work, Russell. It would be somewhat unnerving to have that one rumble up to the curb and the guy in brown walk up with your package...
Amtrak's northbound Silver Star hit an SUV north of Columbia, SC in the wee hours of this morning. The SUV driver apparently decided that the tracks were a highway and drove some distance down the tracks. The SUV driver was killed, the train crew and passengers are fine and CSX has some maintenance work to do. Here's the Star with only very minor pilot damage: Here's CSX coming to the rescue: Here's the amended consist ready to go: And the rock train ready to go when everything clears: Q464 was on the way and I'd hoped to make a shot with it passing the rock train, but a downpour began and I packed it in.
Glad to read the crew and passengers of that Amtrak train are all OK. Someone on drugs? Drunk? Or? I like seeing the outline of an old GP30. It may not be exactly a GP30 underneath these days, but that silhouette is unmistakable.
