Kevin, it is really exciting to see the progress you folks are making. Having all the stay rods installed in that big firebox patch is a real milestone. Nice that you all take time to show interested groups like the Cub Scouts around the site. Luke Johnson was there--I know Luke, and Luke knows steam. Put him to work! :tb-biggrin:
Sorry I have been busy, Lots of photos though. Great pictures! I wish I was younger and closer to you. Grandpa used to to take me to the C & NW roundhouse before I went to grade school and I caught the steam, oil and ash flavor. Even before 1st grade. Keep up the great work.
How many million parts make up that 2900? It is amazing how many parts you guys are refurbishing or rebuilding. This locomotive will be brand new when you fire her up. How many cats on the premises now? Lastly, the shirt that one guy has on would surely be one I would wear to work on a locomotive, as it would be in the trash soon after. Just kidding. You guys are doing an amazing job. :tb-biggrin:
I would sure like to have an old head explain how they designed in the out of round for those side rods. There must be a way they do a calculation. And seeing them work on that coupler sure reminds me of so many times I did similar fussing around on freight cars.
Lots of cussing on that project... Lots. The front of the engine had a bushing in it to make it "railroad round" again. After the proper removal of the bushing, the pin went right in. This bushing is why the pin was a pain to remove in the first place. It took a 50 ton jack to press it out... After putting some dry graphite on the pin and in the pocket, it slides back and forth with one arm...
Thanks for the updates, I've been following the progress on 2926 for a few years through the website. Hopefully I'll get to see her in person someday!
That front end shot with feedwater heater work going on is kind of a sneak preview of how good that locomotive is going to look when you guys get through with her, not to mention how she is going to RUN. :tb-biggrin:
Thanks Fritz. Grin Here is the latest sets of photos. http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/4-14-12/index.html and http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/4-21-12/index.html Have fun, Kevin
Kevin, thanks for the latest update. That's a shame that the feedwater root valve had to be cut out. Any way of getting a replacement, or will you have to fabricate one? Seeing the sale items in the World HQ reminded me, I still want to buy at least a shirt. Must go check the website for the store. :tb-biggrin:
Kevin, you guys are doing some wonderful work. I wish I lived nearby so I could help, if only as a Gofer.
Thanks every one, Boxcab, the cab goes on and off with great regularity, grin, I know it was on for the open house last Oct. Here are the latest photos from the club site. http://www.nmslrhs.org/images/photos/4-28-12/index.html Fritz, try the contact part of the club page, they can probably help. Hytec, we have members all over the world, you are more than welcome any time. Regards, Kevin
