I have to respond in favor of Athearn, There are no trouble with any of my Athearn units, Power or Dummy, I have found nothing wrong with there Plastic Dummy wheels,What to do is use a White grease, Lithium type like you would lube something on your car/truck and grease the Axles a little bit in them plastic holders. I had a test track of 40 feet around the room last spring, pulled 35 cars "all correctly weighted" and a couple power and coupel dummy units and pulled ap a slight grade "maybe around 1% or so" and no trouble at all for a pair of GP38-2s. Watash, You didn't look close enough! Their isn't any air pumps on my smoke box fronts of my EM-1, "Yellowstones"! The B&O didn't have flying pumps on the smoke boxes of the EM-1's. My pumps are on the Fireman's side of the boiler! I'll see if I can find my other pictures of her thats the opposite side to show where my pumps are on her.... But I can say I may by a chance have a hand full of air pumps.... If you needs a set or something let me know in e-mail, I'll see what I may or may not have and let you know... Hiya Larry, I think the problem here was one of usage, the person who started the thread was trying to use one powered & two dummy to haul a train, if you try taking one of your powered loco's out of your set I think you'll see that it doesn't work so well. It's basically just a case of providing enough power to move the train. I have quite a few Athearn dummies, a few more powered's, and a handful of ex-powered dummies that do have less rolling resistance. I too am pretty happy with them all. All the best
Even though i'm a steam fanatic. I have plenty of diesels.... Alot are Athearns and I have alot of Athearn dummies. I run 2 powereds for ever 2 dummies no matter what when i'm running diesels so... But most of my Athearn dummies are the older ones... And roll better then the newer dummies do!
