My wife and I have plans to construct a model of the DRGW Dual Gauge line between Alamosa and Antonito. Now we have not had too many problems finding details about Antonito, but we are having problems finding out about La Jara. I have tried writing to the city council at La Jara, but they have not even had the decency to acknowledge my letter. I was wondering if anybody out there had any photographs of the depot building from the northwest, north, northeast and east facade. Also any dimensions of this building would be appreciated. Finally what other buildings associated with the railroad that could be found at La Jara, would also be appreciated. Thank you in advance.
Denver Public Library - Search Engine This is a great resource of Western History photographs of all kinds. http://photoswest.org/presearch.html
I was wondering, when I read the thread title of "La Junta." Anyone know where I can find a train order copied at La Jara? Boxcab E50
Stourbridge Lion Many thanks for those photos. All I need are some dimensions now. Only a couple would do, we could guesstimate the rest. Still Many thanks.
La Jara Whoops. Wrong title, Sorry about that. Severe case of finger trouble -- Its been a long day today. Still its corrcted now.
Glad to help Sorry, I don't live close enough to swing by and catch some dimensions otherwise I would get you all the angles, etc. that you wanted. Given the photographs of the depot with other things also in the image you might be able to get a reasonable guesstimate. If I come across anything that has something better I will definitly post it for you. Members: If anyone is going to ride on the Durango & Silverton or the Cumbres & Toltec this summer, this is just up the line along with other Rio Grande sites worth catching.
Here is some more angles From: http://ghostdepot.com/rg/mainline/san%20juan%20branch/la%20jara.htm Buy the DVD

La Jara Stourbridge Lion Once gain thank you very much. With regard to the DVD I HAVE BROUGHT IT!! What do you think started the narrow gauge bit off. I originally brought it for details about the standard gauge Rio Grande. Then we saw a nice K-27 model and that started things going. We used the DVD to make a start of the track plan for the two locations, but as yet we have not been aboe to get a definite picture of a number of the buildings and/or facilities on and around the tracks. Antonito not a problem, but La Jara, oh boy!. I have watched several videos of the place, but everybody is standing in a place which is not much helpt to me. Emery Gulash's video of the Rio Grande (The two part one) has a fleeting glance of the north end of La Jara depot, but with the K-36 blasting so much smoke throught the place, it is difficult to work out where things are exactly. It looks like I shall have to wait for a couple of years before we could get out there with my tape measure and camera. It would have to be a quick visit, because our three GSD's would have to stay in bording kennels, something which they are not very keen on. Still once again thanks in advance to anybody who might be able to help us with our little problem. Thanks Ron.
