Another look at the E units in action. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bdu6M2Rf14I"]YouTube - Mikes EL E8's[/ame]
Mike I noticed you didn't put on the MU connectors above the headlight. Nice models though. Who makes the Es and F in Jerry's video?
Typical West Coast, laid back modeling. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHBzoOYeS5o"]YouTube - Lackawanna (DL&W) Coal/Iron Ore train.[/ame] Here are my dad's FTs with 58 cars including a cleaner car.
Jerry, very nice work on Mike's E-units and PA's. It is nice to see people putting a high level of detail into EL engines. It is too bad that some people always see fit to find what you did wrong or forgot to add. I used to hear that from time to time with my old DL&W layout that was in RMC. Eventually, I stopped inviting people like that over to see and run the layout. I love that you put the bug deflectors above the headlight on the E8's. I did that and they lasted about 3 minutes before I accidentally knocked them off. Oh yeah, did you model the mandatory case of Rheingold stashed on the floor of the cab?
Thanks Scott! I did get one case in the 814. The bug deflectors are so cool I really wanted to add them for Mike. I thought about how easy it would be to bust them off, so I notched the headlight and fit/glued them in the slot. (I also used Gorilla Glue!) Hopifully they will last longer then yours did! If not, Mike will have you replacing them!
Scott I met both Jerry and Mike at NSC 2007 in Ct. During one of our conversations, I mentioned that I had purchased an EL PA and wanted to detail it. When I made note of the MU connectors on the nose, Jerry said that he had done Mike's and didn't add them. Considering what he's been through since then, I didn't think he'd remember it, but I couldn't resist giving him some good-natured grief. I in no way meant to criticize his work, as Jerry has reached a level of ability that I could only hope to attain. But I don't need to tell Jerry that, as he understands. Whether or not you do, I don't know, but that's your issue to deal with, not mine. When you and I met at Kenvil Hobby several years ago, you didn't seem so touchy. Whatever. Lighten up, you'll live longer!! John Cicero ps. Mike, just let us get through our club's show and we'll get together. Looking forward to it.
Jerry, I thought about notching out the nose. That is definitely the way to go. The coolest thing about those deflectors is that they really show up well in pictures. I have a set of E8's sitting on the corner of the project bench and will have to do those deflectors. I am looking forward to seeing those engines in person at Mikes sometime in the future. Hopefully they won't be in the repair bin. I have too much work to do with horns on EL engines right now anyway. Mike has one killer U-boat as a result of the horn project. John, it looked to me like you were nitpicking Jerry's work. Reading your post, there is no indication of it being a joke. There are a lot of people out there who always find their way to see past quality work and find the one detail that was forgotten. They seem compelled to point out those facts since they are not capable of doing such nice work. Also, I would love to "lighten up" as since becoming a locomotive engineer, I have added a few pounds in all the wrong places. scott
Sweeeeet!!!!! This may be the inspiration I need to find those EL decals and paints that have been gathering dust on my workbench and convert those Kato E-8's at last. Awesome work Jerry! Bet you can't wait to see them in operation on your layout Mike, and we can't wait for the new pictures! Scott, after seeing your fantastic work you shouldn't need to apologize for being sensitive about rivet counting criticism. I try to look at someone's work and appreciate the effort behind the extra detail that was added. Work like yours and Jerry's is the kind of high standards that demonstrate what N scale is capable of. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone.
I really have to say that those E8's have gotten me to pick up the x-acto and CA again. I have been in a state of creative constipation lately and haven't been able to really produce anything. This is getting me into doing some work. I really like the amount of EL guys floating around here. I am going to do some work in my basement this winter (new ceiling, lighting, remove some walls) and then hopefully, by Spring, will be building benchwork. The new layout is EL circa 1970 from Scranton to East Stroudsburg. I have a killer track plan which is faithful to Scranton from Bridge 60 to Nay Aug. That works out to be around 30 feet long or so. The layout then hits a few more important spots in the Poconos and eventually winds up in East Stroudsburg. Lots of mainline running and lots of drilling. Sounds like we have a few guys here who could bang out an killer operating session. I think Mike already has dibs on ES99/SE98. Mike, you better bring the 3067 for that train! I know you have one really nice red baron CNJ SD40! Scott
