I don't want to derail the topic, but is there any major difference between the SW1 and the SW1200 ?

The SW-1 was first produced in 1938 with 600 hp and one stack. The SW-1200 appeared in 1954 and had a 1200 hp engine and two stacks. Other than that not much different as far as Z scale goes. Cheers, Jim CCRR

SW1 had a bump or step on the front under the front grill. later SW from EMD had this front step removed. i believe later models also were longer in the hood than the SW1. beyond that they looked fairly similar. arrangements of grills and vents varied with each model, in addition to the 1-stack or 2 stack spotting feature.

    Hi,

David is right, main difference is the the longer hood w/o the step, arrangement of doors and vents and 2 stacks to accomodate the bigger engine. Frame looks very similar, distance between the trucks is the same. The cab on the SW1200 is further back, so it doesn't have the big "balcony" like the SW1. Some SW1200 had also Flexicoil trucks instead of AAR.
