The Conrail rostered a wide variety of locomotives during its existence. So what are your favorite(s)? Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! Coming soon: The North Carolina Railfan Web Site http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/
Hmmm...Conrail had an interesting fleet, it's kinda hard to pin down a favorite! I was lucky to catch run-through CR power out here on the SP occasionally. But if I had to choose 2 favs, I'd pick these: 1. SD40-2: One of my all time favorite EMD's, and the uniqueness of Conrail's units (Flexicoil trucks) makes them even more interesting. 2. SD45-2: There's just something about big EMD's! Paul #3 ------------------ Have A Nice Day!
My Favorites are, SD60, SD60M, and like mankind said, The SD40-2 ------------------ CSX and HO Scale The Newark Branch RR Ship it the good 'ole way, BY RAIL http://homestead.juno.com/huntertjo
C'mon, you have to go with something original!! Everybody had SD40-2s!!! Me, I'd say the Honorary Alcos, the C32-8s. Big beasts of engines. The C39s are not too far behind. For an EMD, the 80MACs are my vote. ------------------ Corey Lynch Pres - Rensselaer Model RR Society, NEB&W RR http://www.rpi.edu/~lynchc/Railfanning/railfanning.htm - My Site http://www.union.rpi.edu/railroad/ - NEB&W
O.K. Mankind, this one's for you! (courtesy the CSX photo archives): Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! Coming soon: The North Carolina Railfan Web Site http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/
These guys (SD45-2's) are still roaming the rails today! Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! Coming soon: The North Carolina Railfan Web Site http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/
I have a confession to make; I like these units: This photo is coutesy the Conrail Cyclopedia website. More info on the SDP45's is available at: http://crcyc.railfan.net/locos/emd/sdp45/sdp45proto.html Anyone want to add some more infor on SDP45's Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! My choice for fav is clear in my mind: The '80MACs take it, followed closely by the traditional GP38-2. I near a small industrial track; hence the GP38-2. I chose the 80's because there are not enough words in the English language to describe how beautiful they look in CR blue! -Nick

I go with Nick, the SD80MAC's and they had a very nice paint scheme. Maybe, if CR still had existed today, they could have expanded that paint scheme to other locomotive types ???? ------------------ Paul the 2nd Paul Van Herwegen HO Rappannahock Terminal Railway G Emerald Valley RR http://home.beseen.com/hobbies/trainfreak/EmeraldValley.html

I Like SD80MAC but I also like the SD45-2 and the C40-8 and the C39-8 the GP40-2 are cool ahh he** I like them all! ------------------ Theres no such thing as having to many coal hoppers or GP40-2 when you model Chessie System LONG LIVE THE KITTEN!!! LONG LIVE BIG BLUE!!! I looked at DCC... and stayed DC!
The SD80MAC was an impressive piece of Conrail equipment that found its way all over the system, even to Anderson, Indiana. Roger Roger Hensley - rhensley@anderson.cioe.com == http://madisonrails.railfan.net/ == == Railroads of Madison County (Indiana) ==

(I think I have flared radiator envy ) However, I will state for the record that I do not enjoy seeing them in the NS scheme Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! I remember very vividly catching a pair of these units in Hamlet, N.C. in the CSX yard, with their CR logos painted out and a simple "VMV" stenciled on them (probably 10+ years ago,,,,) Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! I am a little surprised that nobody "voted" for the GP15-1's They certainly were unique locomotives. Harold ------------------ Harold Hodnett Fan of NS, CSX, and their predecessors! Coming soon: The North Carolina Railfan Web Site http://www.trainweb.org/ncrail/
You know what the problem is, its that there is just too much of a variety of power to choose from. You have everything from the 80MACs to the MT-4s. To list one fav is almost impossible, and most like the road power. The GP15 is a cool loco, based on the Tunnel Motor design, it's supposed to be EMDs "next generation" road switcher. I think most RRs will stick with their 38s and 40s. ------------------ Corey Lynch Pres - Rensselaer Model RR Society, NEB&W RR http://www.rpi.edu/~lynchc/Railfanning/railfanning.htm - My Site http://www.union.rpi.edu/railroad/ - NEB&W
The C40-8W is the way to go for me. The first ever wide-cab I ever saw was one just after CR got them. I still don't know of a paint scheme (other than Ferromex from Mexico)that looks as good as a newly painted CR C40-8W. From a pulling ability the SD60M or SD60I did the job nicely for the newer generation locomotives. But from a performance standpoint my preferences always bounce back to the SD40-2 which could tug a train with minimal effort......
