Foamers unite! Somebody buy this guy a ticket to Winterail: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/excited-train-guy-video-double-rainbow-210735869.html
Nope. Same video in both threads. The video in the OP's link (of both threads) is -- as reported in the other thread -- a parody of THIS video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RhYXNwvcl6A
While perhaps originally meant as an in-side joke this video has gone viral from what I can see. As such the perhaps unintended consequence is to re-enforce yet again the general public's perception that all those who participate in railfanning, and by association model railroading, are more than just a little "strange", or possibly down right mentally unbalanced. If you doubt this, just look how we are depicted constantly in the movies and on TV; not one fully in control of all his mental faculties in at least the last 20 years! Anyone truly revel in being likened to the Sheldon Cooper character on The Big Bang Theory? NYW&B
Randy, it may be a joke, but I've seen plenty of guys like this. Kenny, yes your right, but while on the clock, they must go to job mode. If not, they'll get caught up in the moment & that's when disaster strikes. Alot of older RR'ers won't work with buffs. Because their mind isn't on the job.
Here's the rub. When he posted it to the Facebook page he clearly identified it as a parody. But the YouTube video itself isn't identified that way.... If nothing else, this is a real object lesson on how something that can seem 'fun' has gotten TOTALLY out of hand.... http://www.facebook.com/SNCTrain/posts/324461384305919?comment_id=1880886&offset=0&total_comments=1 UPDATE: OK, it's official.... this now on CNN: http://www.cnn.com/video/?hpt=hp_c2#/video/us/2012/08/03/tsr-moos-excited-train-gag.cnn I gotta hand it to him.... one of the better 'mea culpas' I've ever seen. "Better foam on your face than egg".
I just finished seeing the CNN piece- I thought it was pretty good. Fooled a lot of people, and made me laugh at myself a bit. Now that I know the backstory, I get the joke. And those two vintage EMDs are STILL awesome-looking.
I know that, and you know that. The difference is, I know where I'm at, and I don't really care about the perceptions of others when it comes to my hobby. My family and many of my friends know I'm a railfan & model railroader, and I keep that facet of my life in the proper perspective. If someone wants to get a warped perception of me being a Choo-Choo nut, well, that's on them. And for the record, "Big Bang Theory" is crap, IMO. Point is, if one is secure in one's own self about who he or she is, what does it matter what the misguided perceptions of others is? I don't. Besides, the video WAS kinda funny- what say we lighten up & enjoy a little humor for once?
Yeah lighten up a bit really. Funny no body really teases me about my love for all things model and prototype railroading. I get teased more for being a neat freak or my OCD. Then again, most people know I wont act like that guy in the video. While I appreciate a nice restored locomotive, I rarely get that excited. Angela will tease me if I get excited at a Jeep (which I do) and say "Oh cool, that is a 1946 Willys CJ-2A with indents!" Even then, my excitement pales in comparison to some peoples, maybe more along the lines of Mr. Spocks raised eyebrow and phrase "fascinating". Besides, society wants us all in neat little boxes, That guy is a train freak, that guy collects comic books, she is a Pintrest freak, horse freak, etc. Usually the ones who say that are a stereotype, label freak. I drive a 14 year old Jeep, wear jeans, boots and a Cheap Trick t-shirt, watch virtually zero TV, spend most of my time in my work shop building model trains and planes. Do you really think I care what society thinks about me?
AMEN BROTHER!!! A faithful description of me, except for the TV & JEEP part..............(although I COULD learn to love my "dream" Jeep) I, too, could CARE LESS!! what "society" thinks of me............I don't think much of "them" either!!
Same here. So-called society can micro-manage their own pathetic affairs. My happiness is for me to decide! If I wish to foam, I shall do so.
Thanks Bob! Gonna go see them next week in concert. Met Rick Nielson in Rockford once, super nice guy.
Wow, how did I miss this one ! I haven't seen a guy that excited since the wind blew up my skirt ! Just kidding:cute:
