Well, at least people here have a sense of humor about it. Over on RYPN it got heated enough that the thread had to be locked. The issue is whether or not it was APPROPRIATE for the actual railroad involved to have been the AUTHOR of the item, essentially poking fun at some of their own customers. The GM did his 'mea culpa' in front of CNN, but that hasn't satisfied some. The only thing I've noticed is that the 'excited train guy NY" is now up to over 800,000 hits on YouTube. The CNN retraction lasted on their web page for about six hours, and got bumped off. I suspect this thing has a life of its own now, retraction issued or not. It's pretty much the railroad version of "Balloon Boy".
1) I think its funny as hell , I don't care who did it they need to audition for "The Family Guy" . 2) I always wear spandex shorts under my kilt to prevent unnecessary excitment among the ranks. Randy
We try to keep it to ourselves. Pretty much all railroaders are some kind of foamer. They are just in denial. To work in this field you have to love it. I have found that some like models, some like books, some like to collect, others like the equipment, and the list goes on. Non railroaders go over board. They usually know the complete history on the cars and usually know more about the engine than the engineer. They usually can be seen carrying a scanner, camera or both.
Check out our local foamer in Chicago land. trains and hawks fan is his name on youtube. Just about every video is like this. Well es a little bit more toned down....not by much though.
Heres my favorite foamer!!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOHFljkZNoo&feature=plcp And just for fun this guy has a good representation of the old DRI Line in my old stomping grounds. Barton Solvents is pretty much spot on! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TuOPR1cfhQ&feature=g-all-u
That's what I mean. There are bunch of them around here, "real" railroaders. They don't keep it to themselves. Scanners, cameras and away they go. Just like non-railroaders. If I didn't know who they were, they'd be just any old foamers. Just as overboard as.....
You do know this is actually a paraody of a Foamer by a Rail. As I said in the intro, Foamer Defined.
Geez guys no duplication allowed. I got to it first and posted it, inspection pit. It is a paraody of a Foamer by a Rail. As I entitled it: Foamer Defined. Funny just to funny!
Yes I do know a couple of guys like that too. But most of the others do keep it toned down a bit. But as I was told by another conductor. "everyone needs a hobby".
This thread about foamers reminded me of my time on the railroad. Some of use liked to mess with them, such as leaving the front door open on the engine, making faces at them, leaning out the window and telling them their lenscap was still on, and my favorite, my engineer and I aiming our cameras at the foamers as if we were going to photograph them photographing us. :whistling: Dieter Zakas
