My first GP39 is in a CSX scheme. [IMG]

My second GP39 will be a GP39e courtesy of Robert Ray. His kits are so easy, even my son could do it. Here is what I have done so far. [IMG] [IMG]

    Very Nice John!

Question. Are you using Enamel or Acrylic paint on the shells?

Very nice shot! You'll have to show a picture of your entire loco roster when you are finished.

those look simply fabulous. i see you installed the fans. what a nice set of engines you've made for yourself! that 39e conversion looks as good as robert's. which, of course, is a remarkable compliment to robert that he will supply us with mod. kits as good as his own.

these geeps are just too much fun!

p.s i've always wanted to comment on your tag: when i lived in dallas i used to look for southwest airlines 737 shamoo fly over my house on approach to DFW. fun times.

Thank you Robert. If it comes out almost as good as your's, I will be very happy.

Tim, I use Floquil to paint all my models.

Joe, that is a great idea, but what I like to see is the roster or Roberts models.

David, Thanks for the complement. I like the idea of each one of us helping each other produce better models. In regard to the fans, I dont think I will do a repaint without using them. I think it add a lot to the look of the engine.

Before I started building by layout, I used to build airliners in 144 scale. I always love the shamu scheme on the Southwest 737-300. I have a collection of over 150 airliners. I still have about 100 unbuild kits. Maybe I will build it when I retire. Riggght.

I know what you mean Robert. Sometimes is fun to continue in one tread, but its hard to find what you are looking for in past treads.

Color me confused... BN removed the 36" radiator fan? But CSX moved the two 48" fans closer together, ala GP38?

My understanding from Robert's explanations is that BN convered both GP30s and GP35s into GP39Es. Though it seems I've seen where someone put the dynamic brake fairings from the GP30 on a GP35, but didn't complete the backdating to GP30. Did I miss something there? Or did they put the GP30-style DB fairings on the GP35 during the conversion to GP39E?

Someone please 'splain the differences to me.

    Thanks,
    Adam

Yes Adam! These units were originally Norfolk Southern units. BN bought them and rebuilt them to GP39-E's, and they were GP30's with a GP35 Cab.
The body stayed as they were, but the prime movers were upgraded to a higher horsepower 645 series engine from the 567 series they had, giving them 2500 HP, up from the 2250 they had.

Wow... Always love the quick response from Rob...

So... The put a GP35 CAB on a GP30, and changed the prime mover... (Is that the engine from the GP35 or GP38?). I just want to make sure I understand this... They didn't convert GP35s into GP39Es; they just used the cab from them on a GP30?

Also, did they do something to the radiator fans, other than remove the 36" fan?

    Thanks,
    Adam

Not all GP39E's were the same. Some were made from GP30's and some from GP35's.

Adam, It is my understanding that they used the GP 39 engine, which is the 12 cylinder version of the 645, and its turbocharge. The GP 38 has the 16 cylinder non turbo version.
I am sure Robert can provide more information on this.

You guys really know how to kitbashed this GP 35's! [IMG]
I think a lot of people would buy a finished model with their paint scheme if they would available. Why nobody makes a offer and start a small business? I would definitely buy some with the Rio Grande paint scheme. [IMG]
I've just not the talent to doing by myself. :(

JR, if you are interested in Rio Grande, then David is your man. His Rio Grande GP 35 is just a excellent painted engine. Just pretend that you'r the godfather. Make him a offer that he can't refuse. He was thinking about getting into the repaint business, and there are other who can repaint for you. [IMG]

Thanks guys. Robert, maybe we can run them together one of this days. Joe, I am thinking of doing a GP38, and repainting a F59phi into CSX colors.
