Alright, I stopped taking my pain meds long enough to stop the 'shakes', and gave these units a little color.
I'll add this was Floquil Signal Red, thinned 5-1. There is about 5-6 light coats on each shell till it looked nice and even.
WOWEE these are neat. For some reason they look great just in the red. I think that might be the color for my fictitious rr.
Jerry is there a particular reason why you did paint the red first and then the silver ? in my opinion the masking would be much easier if you paint silver first an then red (specially with this kind of shells where you can't remove the cab and the sill...) and isn't it always better to paint the lighter color first and then the darker one... ? just a thought...
I had this thought too, Steve... Maybe the pain meds or paint fumes took their toll? All kidding aside, they look great!
No fumes...must be the meds! LOL Actually, just force of habit. I always paint the Yellow/Blue Warbonnets 'Yellow' first. You are right though, with this shell, the silver first would have been much easier. I may still do this, red primer works just fine.
Better idea- fade the red a bit, paint a white center stripe, put a Gyralite in the nose...... Just kidding, Jerry- but I now know what a Frisco GP60M would have looked like in Mandarin orange & white. Can't wait to see this trio in full Warbonnet colors!
I do the same thing...image what a unit would have looked like if a railroad had survived to present times.
I painted some SP Golden State passenger cars and put the silver down first. After I had painted the red and was taking off the masking tape, the silver had taken on the texture of the tape. So be careful. When I went back and painted the red first, I didn't have any problem with the silver.
hmmmm ? - what tape did you use ? - for how long did the silver dry before you did mask the shell ? - what paint did you use ? waterbased or solvent ? yes, silver is a littlebit tricky but I have made very good experiences with Polly Scale ATSF Silver and a good layer of gloss coat first before I did use Tamyia masking tape...
