As the crow drives his crowldsmobile, the eastern part of my modeled area is 315 miles, and the western is 450. Oddly enough, my route represents nearly 200 miles of railway.

About 50 miles and 40-45 years. Funny, but I'm about a 5 minute walk from another railroad, and within earshot of all three crossings in town.

30 - 50 miss, depending on what part of the Rio Grande I'm headed for.
About 20 years to late. Anything before the UP destruction of the DRGW, and before the SP fiasco that started everything.
Or about 5 miles, if I choose to watch the BNSF working in town!

My modern era interest steams from things I see near me in Chicago, so <500 miles. I also put 500-1000 miles for my interest in the New Haven. That is a great enough distance I have never personally seen and former trackage, equipment, etc from the New Haven.

Grew up a block away from the Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines in Westville, NJ.
In 3rd grade, moved to Woodbury Hts, NJ and was 3 houses from the tracks.
Since my last move, I can hear the whistles at night but haven't been to the tracks (Sewell) yet, probably a mile away.
Just wish I could remember the PRSL & Pennsy steam engines on the line but I have only 1 fuzzy kindergarder memory.
And then we got stuck with the almost black (DGLE) boxy Baldwin AS-16s.
At least we had a dozen shiny silver RDCs.

1930-1980 - 500-3000 miles. All of the roads are fallen flags. And since it's freelanced time overlaps will/do occur.

I would have to choose both > 3000 because of the Shinkesen I run and < 500 because of the Barr. That does not include the CP and GN.

    And 1952. Same road, too!

The abandonment of the line came in the eighties, iirc.
