Found these cars on an excellent website here in the UK. These clay slurry cars have a very pronounced slope to the tanks (Super center-flow)? :D

That first photo looks like its really over loaded! :D But I know its not. charlie, your right. Really weird looking for a tank car. But interesting... I bet the fluid runs through the piping really easy and at a fast rate with the slope of the tanks.... Nice design for gravity flow...

    Alan,
Those are in really decent shape for being work cars or MOW's!!!! But nice cars.... Its good to have a little change of scenery, to see the other railroads in the world and just not only American stuff. Gives us all alittle variety... :D

Very nice shots, Alan- thanks for sharing these with us! [IMG] I agree, it's good to see what rolling stock from other places looks like. Now, if we could get some Aussie shots.....

The aggregate hoppers look like some of the live-bottom dump trailers I saw in Texas (we called 'me rock haulers, 'cause the hauler mostly crushed limestone).

Help me out here- isn't Yeoman the outfit that bought special-built diesels from EMD for their rock trains? I remember reading somewhere that a company in Britain purchased American-built locomotives, which I thought both unusual and interesting.

Right on the button, Bob! Foster Yeoman were the first to order class 59's from EMD. A single unit replaced two of the British Rail ones used previously. They had excellent creep control, and were able to restart very heavy stone trains on steep grades.

Now the class 66 locomotives developed from them rule our rails hauling freight of all kinds, and are spreading into several european countries.

Here is a photo of one in original paint scheme

OK, that's what I thought. Great shot, BTW- wonder if the 645 prime mover is turbocharged or not.....

Are the Class 66 diesels also EMD-built, or British-built?

The 66's are all built in London, Ontario.

Those tanks are for china-clay slurry I think, and work thro. to the continent via the 'tunnel'.
The 59 is a fantastic engine, should have had them years ago.
The 66 is a different creature, they do the job ok but are noisyand ride like crabs at higher speeds-the earlier ones had every panal in the cab vibrate;we call them 'Friday afternoon' engines-put to-gether in a hurry.
    Best wishes
    Steve

Steve, I have spoken about the 66's to another engine driver I know, and he does not like them at all. He says they will not load, and are not very powerful due to restricted electrics, or something. He agrees the 59's are superb!

Last summer I baught a tanker and left it in the car for several hours while shopping. That evening when I opened the box it looked just like that first tanker. It wasn't that way when I first looked at it in the store. It coupled good and ran fine. Now I can say it is a replica of a China clay car.

Do any of the european hobby companies make a model of the Calcium Carbonate car? I could use a half dozen of those for hauling Unobtanium sludge! Looks like it would be a ***** to scratchbuild, but not impossible. Thoughts anyone?

In OO scale Lima made a passable attempt at the Croxton & Garry twin tank, there are much more common 2 axle versions though with only one tank, used for cement & chemicals. (The Lima twin tank is basically 2 shells on a bogie chassis, which is close....) You can get models of these from Lima, or Hornby, or Dapol (why we needed 3 models of the same thing when there's so much else that isn't made I don't know  )

In N guage Graham Farish has done the 2 axle version but it's listed as currently unavailable.

The china clay tanks are still used on a unit train from Cornwall up to (I believe) Scotland, I photographed it a couple of weeks ago, so I'll post the pics later, I also have some fun UK wagon types I'll post at some point, I just need to get the pics uploaded! [IMG]

    BTW, Unobtanium......I like it :D

OK, here's a train of the China Clay slurry tanks passing Dawlish a couple of weeks ago, a quick comparison with the pic link in the start of the thread shows that these wagons don't stay shiny for long!!! (At one time a chap was employed to clean them, a solid set of the silver tanks was rather stunning!)

Unfortunately I was setting up to shoot a special train with a preserved diesel coming the other way (see the Purple Deltic thread under Europe), and had no warning of this one coming (there's a tunnel over my right shoulder!), so all I got was a pic of the back of the train! :(

On our trip north to the Barrow show back at the end of March, we had chance to stop off at Bescot yard, in Birmingham, which gave me chance to photograph these interesting stablemates to the Autoballaster wagons pictured earlier in the thread.

These are new side tipping wagons for MOW use, interestingly there are two bodies on each chassis, controlled separately. Each set consists of 5 cars which are bar (permenantly) coupled together, one car on each set has a generator to work the tipping mechanisms. This is one of the end cars with standard european buffers & couplings.

and this is the next vehicle in the set, which has bar couplings only.

Unfortunately the rest of the set wasn't in a good enough position to get pics :(

Thanks Martyn, those are very interesting wagons, and VERY clean! I have been past there many, many times, but never thought of stopping off to get some photos :(
