Very nice Gary! I can see you put a LOT of time into the cab alone (I did note all of the changes, and there are many).

Great work, can't wait to see the rest of the loco!

Gary, so is that the JnJ all-weather window or the Loco-motives one? Either way, they look fantastic on your cab. Good job!

Gary - do you paint the cab seperate or do you paint it with the whole shell?

I found some more info about the cab number placement we were talking about. I can't find a shot of the cab with the old red & white but with the hocky stick repaint the numbers are high on the cab on both sides for series 767-774 (the third order) just shifted left to clear the vent on the engineers side - Graham's site has shots of both sides of the repaints.

In Frank Jordan's 1975-1992 Photo Archive, look on pages 33, 49 and 74. The GP38-2's had the numbers lowered on both sides. I'm fairly sure these are EMD paint jobs. So I would think the old Red & White would have had the numbers low on both sides.

An overdue reply, here. My apologies.

Rob, I masked the cab and body together then cut the tape so I could seperate the two and painted them seperately. The problem I found is I didn't maintain the glazing in the cab when put the cab and body together for masking. Not doing this allows the cab to move around a touch and caused the paint seperation not quite to line up on one side of both units. Next time I will doing the masking with the glazing in. Live and learn. [IMG]

Thanks for the pointers. I had checked Graham's site, plus the books I had, but the real clue for 764's cab number came from the SOO magazine you lent me. It showed the number moved to the left of centre to clear the vent.
As for the numbers being lower on the cabs with a centrally mounted vent, the numbers were applied lower both sides at the factory on the GP38-2's, but only on the engineer's side of the SD's, IIRC. Later repaints may have changed this application, though.

Anyhoo... they're done. About all that's required is a thin wash of black in each of the horn bells to give them depth and to touch up the class lights. Below is a family portrait.

Don't you just love how a camera can pick up the slightest mistake in the right light?

    And a top view...
