    Good Question MRL

I would be interested to get some feedback should we have a change from the Spring to a Winter Layout Party. Maybe at the beginning of the New Year. So I added a Poll to this thread.

Please vote and post your comments

Great idea!!! Maybe TB could have both so if one didn't have the funding or supplies in the spring one could do it in the winter and vice-a-versa.

I'll vote for a winter one. My 2 year anniversary for the layout is March 1, and I'm no where near where I wanna be by then. So it'd be good help for me!

A "party" is when you spend 5 or 6 weeks if I recall corectly(please correct me if I am wrong here) and you have to post a progress shot every week to showcase how far you have gotten with your project. The project can vary a whole section of a layout to a whole layout to buildings to scenery.
Here are some rules I found, much better than trying to remember off the top of my head...
    Rules:

    1. In your first post please post a picture if possible of the area on your layout that you intend to work on

    2. Brief description of your layout to present, with what you want to accomplish in the next 7 weeks (don't make it grandiose is my recommendation).

    3. On a weekly basis post a Brief description of what you hope to accomplish in the next week.

    4. A commitment to posting once a week describing what you have or have not done. It is important to report if you have "fallen off the wagon (not worked on the layout" all are human here, and we can encourage you to repair the wagon wheel). You can include pictures, problems you have encountered, get bragging rights around the cooler, etc. I’m looking for you to walk the walk, as well as talk the talk.

    5. A commitment to not fudging your reply so that you look better than you are really doing. By joining this group, you are acknowledging already that you haven't worked on the layout as much as you know you should have. The idea here is for us to have some fun and act as an electronic round robin self help group. When I have others coming over to my home to help me build, I am more efficient because I have to plan and prepare, then work when they arrive. Well, this is the internet round robin group, we may not be able to physically help you out, but we can support you and your efforts.

    6. At the end of the Layout Party you are pleased asked to post a picture of your accomplishments.

I see... I like the option to say that you've "fallen off the wagon." My hesitation in making multi-week commitments usually has to do with uncertainty about where I will be each week. Every now and then, I end up working in San Francisco for the week. Obviously, my layout wouldn't be going with me at those times.

I put down for winter, just because I am less likely to have Honey-Do List interruptions than in the spring, but I'd consider joining a spring layout party just as well.

    Layout Parties as Motivation
It seems like the times I'm most productive on my layout are when I'm preparing for my 2 to 4 open houses or operating sessions each year, or joining the Annual Layout Party...probably because the fixed deadline when visitors will see the layout or TB members will see my weekly progress report, motivate me better than I'm able to motivate myself, if I'm the only person that knows I haven't done much. In addition to avoiding potential embarassment if trains don't run well or if I have to report I've been unproductive (avoiding negative consequences), I also look forward to all of the positive strokes I'll receive from some of the hundreds of viewers who follow the Layout Party thread.

Regarding the 2009 Layout Party Poll:
The Poll is set up as an either/or choice...a forced choice between Winter or Spring.
Because of the boost it gives my motivation, I'll jump in to a Layout Party regardless of whether it is a Winter Party or a Spring Party. Are there others who truly have no strong preference either way and (if a third poll option were available) would choose to participate in a Layout Party, regardless of whether it was in the Winter or in the Spring?

Layout Parties for other seasons of the year:
Several years ago, I proposed a Summer Layout Party shortly after we had closed that year's Spring Party, but didn't get (m)any takers. I think 3 factors contributed to the lack of interest in a Summer Layout Party:
    1. the better outdoor weather in the summer--in the northern hemisphere, at least--may have distracted some modelers from working on their layouts (I believe this is probably the strongest factor);
    2. the Spring Layout Party project may have drained the train budget low enough that an immediate leap into a second project may not have been financially possible for some modelers; and
    3. modelers' interest in their layouts may go through a natural cycle of increased involvement followed by decreased involvement and the Summer Layout Party may have come too soon for some who had just completed the Spring Layout.

If we start a Winter Layout Party in January or a Spring Layout Party in March/April, I think we will not have to contend with as many distractions as would be encountered in a Summer Layout Party. Finances could, of course, limit some modelers to a single Layout Party, but there are probably members whose finances are able to support more than one Layout Party in a year, or they could take on smaller, less expensive projects for more than one Seasonal Layout Party.

Is there anyone who would be likely to participate in BOTH a Winter Party AND a Spring Party, if such a fourth poll choice were available?

What other factors might support or detract from offering a second Layout Party within a single calendar year?

Dave, since this would be the first layout party I'd be involved in, I really have no preference. I'd even be up to being in both. Is it possible to change the poll? I already voted for the winter one thou. Like I said in my previous post, I would love to have a winter one, since I really want my layout at a certain point by March, and I'm positive I would get the stimulus to reach my goal from the people here at TB. :snowman:

I voted for a winter one. I need the motivation to keep working on the new expansion of my layout.

Greetings gentlemens. Im the new guy around...

Altho Im hard-wired for respecting traditions, starting early next year would fit my agenda just fine as the planning stage of my layout is well under way. The plan itself is not getting any better and I found a local retailer who has all the spiffy bits I'm gonna need and/or want.

I would join the winter party. :tb-cool:

    Mike (Pastoolio), et al:
At the time of composing this post, there have been about a dozen and a half votes cast in the Poll. Let's continue with the same 2 poll options until we go a few days without new votes.

After closing the polls, we can decide whether there is adequate support for starting a Winter Layout Party without pulling too many participants from the Spring Layout Party.

With enough support, we could have both a Winter AND a Spring Layout Party and members could participate in either (or both) as long as they are willing to meet the expectation of a firm commitment to posting weekly progress reports.

I wouldn't mind a winter and spring layout party. As mentioned earlier, I just finished a month long project fencing in a scrapyard (I will post a description and pics in a separate thread). It took me a month since the best time to work on the layout is on the weekends plus maybe a couple of nights during the week. Cost was not a factor since the wood for the fencing was just over $5.00 and I had everything else on hand. The last party was a great motivation to get some scenery done so bring it on!

No worries. Just post the pictures and tell everyone you are working on it right now. :happy19pb: You may get inspired to do another project, too.

If the voting keeps going the way it is, Winter party msy get the node. We would Need to gauge the true interest of a spring one after.

Since this would be my first layout party I prefer a winter one. I want to try it on a modest level to see if I keep up my participation.

I sometime go six or more months without any work on the layout. I've no track laid and have not yet run any of my locomotives on this in work in progress layout. If this works for me then I may also go for a spring/summer one.

BTW: I voted Spring but have changed my mind to a winter one.

    See ya
    Ron.
