I got this Genesis BN SD60m #9284 for a descent price at the Local Hobby shop a few months back. It came with most of the details already installed. But man these plastic handrails are sure not robust at all, That is the biggest problem I have with these newer locos is the plastic handrails. I agree, they look better but man they sure break easy. It is sure heavy and should pull really good. I was almost done with it when I noticed a picture on the net the #1 Rad fan replaced with what was likely a rebuilt Oakway fan. These differences are what I enjoy modeling, thankfully the fan popped out I sprayed it Blue and weathered the the fan and snapped it right back on LOL. Put the FRA strips and a set of alignment control drawbars on it, weathered it up too. Tried some Tamiya weathering pigments on this loco, I kinda like the way it goes on and the lighter colors dont disappear with a dull coat application. Thanks for checking in.
Tom and Paul, Very nice finds! I'm sure you will have fun with them! I've come into a bit of "found" money so I decided to add some more high horse power locomotive. Any ideas gents? Also, is there a shortage of motive power going on? I've seen some odd ones on the BNSF main east of Tulsa lately. Today was a BN lead unit followed by a CR then a UP, and then another BN. Last week I saw a Ferromex unit in Tulsa. Thanks, Dale
Very nice loco! I never really liked the way the white face was applied to the 60M's but I have a soft spot for them as these were the last new locos to receive cascade green. Years ago I had a pair build from Railpower shells one with each style cab. Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
I built this BN LNG SD40-2 #7149 in 1999, before the San Jose NMRA in 2000. The prototype photos of the unit were taken be myself at Pain CO in 1997-8. We were on an Eastbound STO-DEN in the hole at Plain. It had been an all nighter and this was not too long after the sun was up good. I looked a few units back and saw this one, we had 8 SD40-2 on this train. I carried and old Chinon manual SLR camera in my grip so I tooks me some pictures, I was surprised at how clean this locomotive was, it looked like it had been shopped per a 92 day FRA inspection recently. I had wanted to build one of these for a while and was gonna just use the rear half of an RPP SD45, but after I looked at this for a few minutes, I realized that the project wasnt going to be that simple. The areas just ahead and just behind the cooling fan flares were going to be a special challenge a lot of really small but very noticeable angled fills would be needed to accomplish this. I basically fabricated the whole Rad section from Styrene using cannon and PSC, DW, DA parts. I also used a late Blue Box Athearn, (the ones with the first plastic handrails). So I had a good base to start with, the Rad section and front anti climber were the only real shell mods done. Used PSC front anti climber and brass wire and stantions completed the front. Used a bunch of PSC, DW, DA, and other details to finish this loco. The paint was a special challenge on this BN units, so many color changes in so many different places. I have always enjoyed using Scalecoat paints, Black, BN Green and White, and Microscale decals were used. I havent put any weathering on this as yet, not really sure I am going to LOL. The model also has, headlights, ditch lights and step lights as well. The prototype; My attempt at modeling this Locomotive; I cannot get the Greens to come out right on this camera, I try adjust the White balance but it never seems to be quite right. Oh well. Where does a person buy photo flood lights? Thanks for stopping by
The model sure looks nice. The prototype shows why I am not much on using white paint. Every little bit of wear, and especially rust, really stands out.
Nice! I need to order one more BNSF unit then I should be done with locos. Unless of course someone comes out with more UTAH stuff like gp38's, gp40's, and SD50's. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
Interesting BN unit with SD45 and SD40-2 details. It reminds me of some hybrid diesels I've seen in Virginia - IIRC, wide cab fronts but narrow hoods with radiator flars like SD45's.
I was looking for something else on the shelf, and decided to take a few shots of the entire GP60 fleet of the Rio Grande. Here they are, 3154 through 3156, all Proto 2000 before the Walthers buyout.
Didn't the GP60's have the large SP style snow plow rather than the D&RGW low profile plow? They were basically built to SP specs. I've got one of those LL P2k GP60's but since I'm back dating and going mostly caboose era, it's up for sale.
I have a p2k sd50 that needs painting and a decoder. It's going to look like this when I am done. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
Yes. These have a larger than DRGW plow...But that might be a detail I'll have to look into. Yes, these were basically SSW units with D&RGW paint.
