I'm doing a freelance shortline connecting to SCL and Southern. And somehow the occassional Aberdeen & Rockfish somehow shows up. The western roads are cool, but SE railroading is my love.
I started wondering how there could be so many posters modeling multiple roads, then it occurred to me that I will also have the Norfolk Southern (trackage rights) and the Sequatchie Valley Railroad (branch line) on my layout. Don't know why I didn't think of this in my original post...birch sawdust must dull the brain because...what were we talking about? Jamie
CB&Q, however my preferences are broadening to "modeling" just about anything that appeals to me. It probably all started when I just couldn't resist buying those fantastic looking WP F3's to match the CZ. My layout in no way resembles the Feather River Canyon, but I still enjoy putting the silver E and F units away and pulling out the WP ABB set. That broke the mold, and I now have the GG1, Broadway Limited and Pennsy E units on order. Did they ever run through Northern Illinois? Not really, unless we count the small corner where PRR approached Chicago. It doesn't matter, I'm out of the box and fully expect to be buying Warbonnets, a 20th Century Limited (hope, hope) and any other fantastic new release that comes along. It's really quite liberating to answer the OP question with "all of the above."
Denver & Rio Grande Western. Hey, anybody notice that K36 steamers are selling like hotcakes in On3? Can you get a K36 in Nn3? Naaaaaaaaaw! Of course, the best road of all, Route 66!
I almost forgot one of my favorites, and noone else has mentioned it.......Illinois Central. It doesn't fit into my home layout, but I love running their passenger equipment at our NTRAK setups. Everyone's either heard Arlo Guthrie or Willie Nelson sing "riding on the City of New Orleans" right?
I see those GP units rumbling through St. Paul on my way to work every few weeks. I must say, they are much cleaner than the old Soo Geeps rolling around, and those Catepillar engines give them a sound all their own! Just the other day I saw a slew of UP power towing a nice string of NSPX cars across the Robert Street Lift Bridge (which I swear is going to collapse one of these days) and now Fox Valley announces NSPX hoppers. Son of a... How is it somebody else with any interest in the Twin Cities would be in Sydney, Australia?
A month ago I saw an Nn3 D&RGW 2-8-2, a K37 if I remember correctly, in a hobby shop in the suburbs of Munich, with a price of €695.00 it's still there. I model the ATSF leaning towards the late 50's/early 60's, but I can put together an operating session from most eras of the Santa Fe though the BNSF doesn't do much for me these days. My own Westfalen & Gulf lets me get away with things ATSF didn't have and I also have a small Japanese interurban layout set in the 60's. After all the requests for Kato to do the North Coast Limited I'm surprised there haven't been more votes for NP.:tb-biggrin:
Indiana Harbor Belt, thanks to Atlas. But, its an excuse to also run all modern roads that go through Chicago, which is just about all the class 1's.
My layout features pre and post merger EL (Erie and DL&W), the Delaware and Hudson, and Lehigh Valley.
I don't have a layout, so I am stuck with getting equiptment to run at my club. I run BNSF (patched SF & BN) with coal. UP with intermodel or a mixed freight. Canadian Pacific with grain. I would try to model trains with patch jobs from older RRs, (SF & BN with BNSF patches, SP,D&RGW,CNW with UP Patches, Conrail with NS patch, etc) My dad's favorite roads have to be Lackawanna or EL. He was born 2 years before the merger, and grew up watching the EL trains run through Kearny, NJ.
D&RGW, D&SL/DNW&P, BN and all its predecessor lines, Milwaukee Road, and a soft spot for Conrail. My grandpa worked for PRR-PC-CR for 27 years before retiring on disability.
I model protolances post-Conrail CSX in SFL with Antrak and Tri-Rail passenger services and FEC connection.
