An FP45 has a steam generator in the rear. You can see the extra space behind the radiators in the photo of the Santa Fe unit compared to Grant's F45. I believe Santa Fe had both F45s and FP45s. I don't know about the GN. I think even the Milw had FP45s, painted in Armor Yellow with Milw lettering as they and UP shared a train (the name escapes me at the moment).
The GN had only F45's. The Milw had only FP45's, some in UP colors and some in Milw orange/black. Tim
Steam was used to heat the passenger cars. I believe it may have also been used for AC? Can anyone clarify that? Tim
FiveFlat, Older passenger cars need steam for heating, which is why older diesel passenger locos have a steam generator. Modern passenger cars use just HEP (i.e. electrical) I think, so more modern passenger locos like the F40PH or AMD103 Gennies don't have steam generators.
John, It's a resin body with etched stainless steel detail parts. It goes together quite easily with just a little patience involved. Here's a list of the parts in the kit... 1 body 2 pilots 1 front pilot plow 1 fuel tank 2 dynamic brake fans 3 body mounting brackets Etched parts included in this kit: 2 pilot mounted handrail assemblies 4 carbody mounted handrails 6 hood side handrails 4 cab side handrails 4 windshield wipers 4 sand hatch caps 1 top inertial screen 2 side inertial small hole screens 2 inertial corrugated screens 1 dynamic brake blank hatch 1 dynamic brake hatch with fan holes and fine screens 1 dynamic brake hatch with fan holes and course screens 2 headlights 4 class lights 2 cut lever/bracket assemblies 2 cab side window frames 2 cab door window frames 12 side steps 4 jacking pads 2 fuel tank gauges 1 fuel tank round gauge 2 wind deflectors 2 sunshades 5 fan grilles 5 fan blade assemblies 2 fine radiator screens 2 course radiator screens 2 radiator screen supports 1 exhaust grille 4 MU hose assemblies 2 hinged battery box door assemblies 2 ledge mounted battery box door assemblies 4 side steps 1 fuel tank step As for FP45's vs F45's.... Santa Fe had both F45's and FP45's. Milwaukee Road had 5 FP45's. Originally painted UP colors but repainted into the orange scheme. GN and BN were the only other original owners of F45's. All F and FP45's had Dynamic Brakes except the 5 owned by Milwaukee. F45's showed up onm a variety of shortlines and class II's. MRL NYS&W WS WC UTAH RY to name a few.... grant
John - "Ignore that man behind the curtain". Hmm, 107 parts. Zowie! Ok, I'm good for 2 but I can kiss goodbye my GN EB something or other order.
Hemi, you know me all too well! There's also a ton of photos of GN and BN F45s in Bob Larson's new book, even a set of four D&RGW GP30s in Portola. The F45s became his favorite loco. I guess I'll have to have Grant send me one after all!
I have Rob Leachmann's book, and I saw some shots of Gateway trains with F45's.. Sweet shots... Steve, Will I be getting a drop shipment?
I'd better break down and change my reply to "yes" before he is. Otherwise, I just know I will be kicking myself for not getting one. Besides, my rent is going to be cheaper in my new place, gotta do something productive with those extra clams!
Can't wait for my 4 units. 2 of them will be in the GN Big Sky Blue while the other two will be in Milwaukee Road Orange and Black. Yes I know the Milw never had F45's but in my world they did. After the big traffic boom on the pacific extension in the early 80's, Milw began purchasing used loco's from alot of RR's. My Milw F45's will be ex GN units. The Milwaukee and Northern Pacific are going strong today in my world! Steve
Dan, Heard any news on what they're going to do with 3636? Keep it for power crunches? Nice to see it back in service. I'm trying to come up with a history for sar 101 and thought 3636, if it gets retired, would be a good candiate. Either that or MRL 391 which is dead in Livingston. Otherwise I'll have to come up with a deeper history as there are only 5 ex BN F45's still in existence. When I paint up the second sar F45, 102, it will be built to Santa Fe specs as there are more of them around, just stored.
