Reminds me of a cartoon that appeared in Punch Magazine at the turn of the 19th Century.

It shows British cavalry on parade with the officers in front, polished helmets and sabers. The Inspecting Officer is a Brigadier who is standing close to a subaltern (Lieutenant), almost nose-to-nose.

"You! What is the role of the Cavalry?" shouts the senior officer.

In a quintessential British accent, the young gentleman looks at the Brigadier and quietly replies, "To lend tone to what otherwise would be merely a vulgar brawl....Suh."

So wait, does this mean no pie?

I feel lied to and deceived. I'm going to rant about it to the nearest trainboard staffer.

My doctor tells me if it is something I enjoy, I can't have it. Now with the meds the beer is out but I could sneak just one piece of pizza.
We can all meet at Ricks house and play with the trains. What else is there to do in Barstow or Big Bear?

Rant? You ain't seen me rant yet!

Hahaha, now that sounds like a good idea.

That's two of us that can't appreciate the finer things. Beer is out for me as well.

    Here's the plan:

First we start off in Barstow, Ca., at the WARM museum (A railroad museum) were me meet and greet.

Then off to the hump yard to watch the big boys play with the 1X1 foot scale trains.

Next a fast trip across the desert through Lucerne Valley and up the back grade to watch the local switch the Mitsubishi Plant.

Up Cushenberry grade where only three of us can squeeze into my 10X10 train shed and run trains. You see, I figure by the time we do all this there will only be three loyal's left to enjoy running trains. I pretty much suspect we will loose the biggest percentage in Barstow at Pizza Hut. Most likely they will end up on Cajon Pass irritating the BNSF police. You know those protectors, that roam the hill. :plaugh:

You are most welcome to visit. I'm just white trash, living in a low income trailer park, with little to show for who I've been or wanted to be.

Rant? Who said I was ranting. I'm full steam ahead and blowing off lot's of steam and smoke. Oh, wait that darn pop off valve is about to blow again and I need to look for a siding to cool off.:pbaffled:

    Have fun!

That pizza doesn't look edible but a Cabernet will do.

Wolfgang, now there's a layout that will fit in my train shed. Hahahaha.

    Talk about tight radius curves!

    YoHO,

Pie? Oh yes and lot's of it. Sugar free of course. Darn it.

OK! This sounds like fun. All I've ever done in Barstow is drive through it as fast as I could (well, ok, I once, in June 1975, had lunch at the McDonalds - then made it to Sacramento by evening; started that day in Phoenix. Lots of driving, by my 20-year-old self).

I've seen one like that built on a bike tire rim that was carefully balanced on an inverted axle and rotated around that axis as the locomotive was in motion.

In answer to the original question of this post... I frequent discussion boards such as this one in order to gather ideas and tips on different methods of doing things. I also really enjoy looking at the modelling and railfan photos each week.

A lot of times, however, I'm also looking for more specific information on eras and operations for railroads that I have an interest in, as the well as the opportunity to examine various what-if scenarios about things that might have happened differently. Someday it might be nice to write some railroad related fiction.

Finally, though, what I'm really looking for more than anything else is to get into the operations side of things... hopefully make a few close associates that could ultimately let me on board for an operating session from time to time as life permits.

    PGE-N 2,

We need to get you to some clubs where operations are copied off the prototypes. My favorite was a small private group in Kettering, Ohio where it is invitation only. Here Rails or retired railroad employees get together for an operations night. It was as realistic as can be. The name of the group escapes me. What we need to do is get a invitation for you, and get you inside to operate trains.

Seems, to me there are some clubs in Vancouver, B.C.. Check with your local hobby shop...sometimes they have the inside track. No pun intended but then that did work.

    Have fun!

Thanks. Yeah, i know there are a couple clubs in the area. I'm not exactly in Vancouver itself, so actually going there is more almost like a day trip for me, so a bit of a stretch right now, just for a couple hours of operation. Maybe once I get things figured out, it may be easier. The reason being is I'm still a student at the moment.

I have already joined my local club, but there is not much potential for operations right now, as there is only a Free-Mo group with no space to set up their layout, and an N-Scale modular that is completely happy running in the proverbial circle on the three track main. I'm working on finding local modellers who might have a home layout for operation, but it's slow going right now. I'm really in that much of a rush, though, anyway.

All this talk of beer and pizza, and now I see my favorite brands on sale this week. Put that all together with my final final exam tomorrow, that makes for some good reasons to party!

What say we all grab a slice and a beverage and meet up tomorrow around 9pm central time over in the TrainBoard ChatBox and just enjoy whatever topics come up? :D
