    Northern Utah Railfanning

Nice Photos Ben, last time I was down that way they were working on the main line so I didn't see any trains. When I got to Grande Jct then thing started to pick up. Like th efirst two photos below of the head end and pusher power on a loaded Coal train, but I missed the two mid train units when they passed thru. the 3rd photo is just out side of Ogden Utah, back before the UP buy out. We got some nice railfanning up north too, even if its about all UP now. Any one wishing to railfan the north end of the state let me know, I can show you were to go to fin dthe tracks.

I just rescanned a bunch of SP photos this past week, so Maybe I should post some more. Most are from just before or after the SP/Up merger, shot in Northern Utah. When I say Northern Utah I mean Ogden northward.

Photo one is shot on the UP Ogden Sub just after the merger, we got a lot of Old SP Loco runing this line just after the big Merger.

#2 is shot just west of Ogden headed for the crossing on the Lake, I noticed that in a lot of the older photos the crew man on the camera side was waving to the me.

#3, this unit is headed westbound too, backwards. it headed out to add more power to a stalled train west of Ogden. also note the friendly wave.

#4 soime Locos of SP & D&RGW in the yards in Prove.

#5 Remember those failed MK units? All three were park at MK in Boise when I took this photo, No it not Northern Utah, but because of MK (or whatever it called now) being in Boise I still get to see a lot of loco eoither headed to for from ther on the Ogden Sub.

#1 How about some Cadillac's for switching the yards in Ogden.

#2 SP 6051 stoped in Ogden for a visit during the Hoslters Train Show at Ogden Union Station, which BTW is come up this next weekend, March 6-7.

#3 Nothing like an Old Southern Pacific Geep to do the switching in the Brigham City yards and run the loacls to Malad & Little Mountain, and this is on the Union Pacific!

#4 Now that the UP is running things in the SP Ogden yards, Mite as well use a small SD45 to do the switching, and hey let toss in a D&RGW caboose too.

#5 UP still using those Old SP units on the locals in the small out of the way towns.

    thats all for now, Enjoy.

Jolly, really like those shots. Check out #7297, has the large SP on the nose and is without the normal SP light package, cool!

Can't wait to see them Ben. So did you win enough money to make chasing trains your permanent career? :D

    Mike,

My wife and I took our 9 year old with us on this trip. He was good insurance and kept me from spending to much in the casinos. I did mange to still loose a few bucks though.

    Here we go again.....

Some coal hoppers off in the distance on the left near Green River Utah. It's hard to shot while you are driving!

And here come the east bound.

While I was chasing the train to Idaho today, I stopped in Mendon Utah to take a few photos of what left of the Oregon Short Line Cache Junion Depot, this part of it was moved from Cache Junction to Mendon, which is not vary far.

There has been some debate on this Depot lately on another group, I have looked before but had not found a good photo of the Depot. After Much searching on the web I finally found two photos of the Cache Depot, the site also have three drawing of the Depot, it was the Library of Congress site I think, not sure but that's how I found it, here is a link,

    http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/hhhtml/hhTitles260.html

Scroll down to "Oregon Short Line Railroad Depot, Highway 23, Cache Junction, Cache County, UT" and click on that link, Then you'll see some boxes, one has a pic of a camera, click on it for the photos.

Now if you scroll down on the page with the pic boxes, look for "SUBJECTS:", click on that link and you'll get two links, one to the Beanery and one to the Depot. If you look at the first two beanery photos you can see that the depot is already gone from the site, it was next to the beanery and it not in those photos.

Anyway I was out and got some photos today, and part of the depot is on the north side of Hwy 23 in Newton were the highway runs east & west through Newton, These are the photos above.

So now the question is were is the rest of the Depot? This is only part of it, my guess is it's the Baggage & Storage room end of the Depot. Is the other part of the Depot some place else as part of some ones home, or was it torn down? Maybe I'll have to do some more exploring on this subject.

I also shot a few photos of the Cache Valley Local Power parked at Cache Junction for the weekend, I got these onthe way back home.

That is a few years old. It has an old reefer on it from the express track days. They haven't had that since 2006.

Yesterday I made a quick business trip to Salt Lake City and back. Unfortunately I didn't have time to railfan at all. I did however see a lot of M.O.W. activity as I passed over Soldier Summit between Price, UT and Spanish Fork, UT. I figured that I would mention the siting so that any of you planning to drive that route can plan to take a camera with you. I might head back their soon and will take pictures if I do.

You are seeing a lot of MOW equipment because the UP is going to be replacing 70K ties on the Greenriver sub between GJT and Agate. Because of this they will be holding AMTK 6 at Greenriver and AMTK 5 at GJT for approx 2 hours on certain days. Those days are as follows:
    March 31
    April 10-14
    April 23-30
    May 8-15
    May 24-26

These dates can change but right now it is what the UP has stipulated. So that is why there is a lot of MOW stuff out there right now. :D

More on the Cache Junction Depot

I posted a few days ago about the Depot that use to be at Cache Junction, I even included the photos above of the half that is in Newton. Well the other day I was out doing Mountain & Canyon Driver training for the School Buses as I'm a new driver. we drove from Brigham City throu Logan and over to Bear Lake. Well we were stopped at the light in Logan and the junction were the highway 91 splits off Main Street when leaving Logan and I happen to look over to the west side of the road and there is was, the other half og the Cache Junction Depot, missing in action for years as no one in the railfan world of Utah had any ideal were it was or if it was evern still around. I looked on Google maps and the spot it sits on is an empty lot.

The Depot is on a new fondation, they are adding on to the end that was cut off, and there is a banner, "Future Home Of Cache Heritage Reality". So I'm guessing it will be restored some what. I'll be keeping an eye on it every time I go over to Logan.
