Lake George was a great place back when we were young and wild.

    Lake George, NY

Pausing here at Lake George, NY for a moment...

For folks that don't know about this area, Lake George, NY at it's peak was one of the hot spots for the "Social" crowd and the D&H made the most of it. I mentioned earlier that the D&H had several Steamships and one of the places these Steamships operated at was Lake George, NY. The dock for the Steamships (initially Paddle-wheelers then later Motorboats) was right across from the Railroad Depot AND behind it was one of the D&H Hotels they also operated that I have not touch on yet. The D&H also had a simular setup on Lake Champlain

The hotel here in Lake George, NY is called the Fort William Henry. Below is one of the images I have from 1926 and you can see the D&H Passenger station in the Lower-Left corner of the postcard. Just below the D&H Depot is where the D&H Steamboat dock is at. You can see this was one heck of a place in it's prime with it's massive waterfront that was all part of the hotel property.

The D&H Steamers that operated here were called John Jay (1850-1856), Minne-Ha-Ha (I) (1857-1878), Ganouskie (1869-1883), Horicon (I) (1877-1908), Ticonderoga (I) (1883-1901), Mohican (1895-1905), Sagamore (1902-1937), Horicon II / Showboat (1908-1939), Mohican II (1908-Still in Operation), Minne-Ha-Ha (II) (1969-Still in Operation), Lac du Saint Sacrement (1989-Still in Operation). The Steamships operated under the company name of the Lake George Steamboat Company.

You might recall my earlier post of the Mohican II we took a spin on Lake George on during this trip which is one of the few surviving ships...

This photo I took of the D&H Passenger station was taken from the Steamship dock

The places were so grand in scale, yet often even an average Joe with family could afford to be there. So sad most were ruined by the Depression, with few surviving in any form thereafter. The railroads were prominent in almost all of these sites. What a special trip it must have been.

Is that an interlocking tower at left side? Is that where another RR (B&M?) crossed?

There doesn't appear to be much left of the old B&M Mechanicville yard looking at Google Earth, just a whole lot of empty space. [IMG]

    Is XO manned any more?

No, and the XO Tower was falling into disrepair when we were there but recently a group started working on restoring it since...

The way that Oneonta freight house was modified is interesting. Was that done by the RR? Looks like it is now condos, so probably remodeled by a later owner?

When the D&H used this building it was just a single story. You can see the Old Brick on the first floor and the New Brick that was added on top to create the multifamily facility (Condo / Apartment) it is today

I did not notice the added brickwork. But that full length shed dormer I was certain had to be non-RR.
