Thanks for Eagle Bridge. Sadly, it didn't age well in the 45 years since I boarded, and nobody seem to care....:)-(

Through the roof is not entirely unusual. However, as seen in the 1928 photo, that type of positioning is odd. It usually happens when the mast is left in place, as originally sited in front of the bay. When the original depot is demolished and replaced by something smaller- Such as a portable. But this one cannot be the case. There is certainly plenty of space in from of the operator's bay, so where this one is set up is rather curious.

I see the section noting their moving of that mast to the roof. But nothing else which really explained the placement at building end. When they built a new station, one would have thought the mast would be placed out front instead?

This might help, this is a photo of the original station in 1900, note the placement being across the tracks. The station that exits today was built in 1911

So the newer station was built where that spur track and box car are shown? That would be the site, according to the 1928 photo?

The D&H had a habit of replacement stations being built on the opposite side of the tracks and this was the case at this location. The notes I found says the spur track was either shorten or removed in 1911 so that the new station could be built there opposite of the old station. I would say based on the notes the new station was built behind the mast and directly across from the old station.

Dannemora, now there's an infamous place, the home of a notorious state prison for men. It's good to see that the town fathers appreciate and have saved good looking sturdy D&H architecture, even though it appears the D&H ceased all operations and removed their track long ago.

I passed by Dannemora Prison on NY Route 22 many times 55-60 years ago. Interestingly, there is no shoulder between the southbound lane of Rte 22 and the prison wall towering 20-30 feet above. If a prisoner had made it to the top of the wall, he would be able to drop directly onto the roof of a passing automobile, and woe be to the driver of a convertible with the top down.

OK. Now all the pieces fit together. Interesting how much can be buried in history, for one little situation.

How many of these structures still exist? Does the BLHS, or someone other than RRSHS, keep an updated list? When I see architecture such as the Fort Edward, I am left wondering. No matter how plain, or seemingly commonplace, losing any is tragic.

Sadly, the RRSHS was my best resource along with some other Personal Depot sites I found at that time. The RRSHS reference my DHVM website and another site I used for reference as their sole source for NY Depots (http://www.rrshs.org/New%20York/nyrrstruc.htm) currently...

After taking this trip I offered my photos to be posted on the BLHS as a resource for others to use and I was "Turned-Down" and that is what led to my DHVM Website being built in January 2000. Today I believe the DHVM is the largest online resource on the D&H; there are other wonderful sites dedicated to portions of D&H history for a given location/era that I also use for reference still today. I built the DHVM to cover all of the D&H history as a free online resource that I hope folks will be able to use for generations to come. Since the DHVM was created, the BLHS created a small Depot section on their website but you still do not find my photos there even though my offer still exists.

I have another RRAdventures Chapter coming from a 2nd trip we took into D&H regions we didn't travel through on this trip that covers more of the Northern sections. I hope we will be able to make another trip in the future but time / $$$ / health / other interests are factors that might preclude us from doing another D&H tour...

I know that same feeling. Especially the $$$ and health part. I have managed a couple of trips to visit my father in these past five years. Along the way have made it a point to detour any time feasible, to see a depot from any railroad. Plus take a few photos of a few older town type buildings. My thinking being 'when will I possibly get back out thsi way again, if ever?'

It's obvious that Lake George was the station for the wealthy social crowd when compared to the photos of all the other D&H stations you've posted. LOL
