What do you when you're a single dad and no life to speak of?...you spend Saturday night weathering your rolling stock. I grabbed some samples on each of the cars I have in stock and started working with oils and Tamaya Weathering Pastels. If you haven't seen these yet, check them out, good range of colors and they are oil based so they adhear pretty well. In the background you will see one of my latest projects for the "Mouse" too. Joe MTL
Joe. It's called cruel and inhumain treatment. Where do you get the caboose and the double door Santa Fe boxcar. Your weathering is great. Jim Thomas
Joe, tell the TTX flat car is for Feb release. Wow, good job on the weathering. keep up with the pictures, because they are great.
Looking good! I believe weathering adds so much more the the realism. Looks like you will have a real nice train to run at the show next month!
I think Joe is a little Goofy in my opinion Joe, the weathering looks awesome! The SP GP35s really shine once dirty (?)! Good job! The 60' flat is great! Rob
the grey PS2 hopper is my favorite (of course, that it's Rio Grande could be part of the reason). you didn't show us the other SP shell, which i can see has had it's grills highlighted (darkened). very nice job on that. the weather is more subtle but very believable. good job on the loco trucks and fuel tank too -- not too much, just enough. i'm also glad to see the marklin caboose in your line up, that tells me you have it front and center on your mind. i'll look for a new caboose to be announced by MTL in the near future. great job on the weathering, joe. i'll check out the tamiya paints. dave f.
Great Job Joe! I like this flatcar also but would appreciate the SP paint scheme. BTW my favorits are the grey cars in the background.
Hi Jurg, Yea, those are mine as well. Did some rework on them, cleaned up some of the details and thinned out the lips of the car, looks much better...and with Robert's Decals these will be very cool. On the ATSF Box Car I took a fine emery board and sanded away much of the markings for a faded look. This works well with the art goes over some sort of line or protusion on the surfact of the car. Tonight I start marking these up and then move on to the rest of the collection. I have a couple of blank Flats and have those painted in SP and will be using some very tiny decals I had done several years ago. Should be interesting. Cheers Joe
SP Thanks Dave, I don't like it when both engines look the same, that's why I do them at different times. The second one will be cleaner with some dust on the lower surface, the third will be something else. If you mix them up they look more realistic. Caboose...what caboose )
lips! what are the "lips of the car"? would that be where the coupler might be body mounted? i'm interested to know what exactly you did to it to clean up the details (and lips). i think we all would. (if we decorate the lips on our cars, should we blot them too? ... just wondering). thanks, joe. dave f.
Weathering Joe, The rollingstock and the GP35 look really good. The realiZm of weathering is a must for any model Train. Z especially! ---------------------- I am seconding this question, is that TTX Flat car the MTL February release? I know of someone who is waiting for the new flat in TTX so he can secure his CAT equipment for rail transport. If you say YES, he will be one happy camper. ---------------------- How about the progress on those small Ore cars you were casting? How are those coming. I've been watching for photos of 20/30/40 of these cars being fully painted and decaled being pulled behind a GP35! Are you close? Can you comment on this project? ---------------------- Thanks for all you do as a Hobbyist and for MTL! Hobo Tim
Guess I'm the only one who noticed the woodchip boxcar? The weathering looks great! My cars are split up into 2 sets, one set is weathered and the other doesn't run on the layout until they are.
oh yea. i didn't even see the wood chip car. that's a plug door with the roof removed and a new edge built up. i didn't know they made them like that. but i guess if some were made from box cars, plug doors would be as good a candidate as any. dave f.
Alright Joe. I guess I'll get busy on my other SP GP. Gotta get one up on ya. BTW: you should receive some nice very high resolution examples in the mail of what they should look like.
Wood Chip Very observent... CP took a bunch of different box cars, cut the top off and added 3' to the top for wood chip transport. They used plugs, welded shut sliding doors and even welded plates over the door. Makes for an interesting mix up in a consist that's for sure. Joe
