Here the 7668 is with new number boards and wind deflectors. Need to find some MV lenses for the sunrise lights, weather, and she'll be done. :)

I know the feeling Jerry. Playing with steam locomotive number boards can get interesting too.

    Jerry,

Just found this thread tonight. My son and I have enjoyed looking at all the work you've done on your SP units. This just might get us motivated to add details to all our N scale diesels! Great job!

I'm glad everyone enjoys these as much as I do. With detail parts from Craig at BLMA it really is hard to make a mistake. They are done so well you can't go wrong. If you can drill a hole with a pin-vise, MU hoses, sunshades, lift rings, etc are nothing more then glue and push in hole. :) I wish sunrise still was in business. His parts are missed, but I looked at the Miniatures by Eric site and he does have some nice stuff. If thats all we have, I wouldn't be afraid to try him out for the SP lights.
My best tip is.....Just do it! Dont worry about it being 'perfect'. I've been running trains for 20 yrs now, and they are not perfect! LOL Paint dont match, parts are bent, missing/added. I try to model off photos. Thats my favorite way to do a model. But sometimes modifying where a part goes on the model can make it look better then being exact. (Close enough rule.;))
The eye will add details to the model that arent even there if you have the important ones.
So if your ready to start....go to BLMA's website, get a couple parts, and dive in! Then post your photos here, (Dont even have to be SP power!), or start a new thread.
Now...if it was just warm enough to airbrush something!

    Hey Jerry,

Great Thread. May I make a suggestion? Instead of MV lenses, use fiber optic for your head lights. To me,they look better and are alot smaller. Plus, you can light them up if desired.
    Just a thought,

Wolfgang, just tried the fiber optic method you suggested and WOW! Much easier then I thought and they look great! Will post pictures when everything dries.
    Thanks for the great tip!
    Jerry :)

    Fiber Optic Size? Etc,?

Looks good, Jerry. What size of fiber optic did you use? How do you heat the end to make the light lens? What size drill do you use to make the light holes? Thanks for answering all these questions. Is there another thread how to do this?

How about the upper lights? [edit] Okay, I see on the rear light package.

I may try this. Normally I take the light boards out of the engine.

Flash, the fiber optics were about the size of a piece of thread, and the drill was about one size bigger then the fiber optic. Wish I could be more specific then that, but my drills are all laying in a little organizer drawer, and the fiber optics were extra from a project Secretweapon sent me.
Here's a video I did of the process. Plug in a soldering gun, take a piece of fiber optic and hold slightly over the hot tip. The end will flare out. I took a couple practice 'dips' before I got the hang of it. :)
