Loco excellent weathering, I use Microscale gloss under the decals and microscale flat for the final coat and it comes out fine as well

Loco, very nice weathering! I like the added touch of the rust on the couplers.
You'll have to update us on your progress with you Unitrack layout. I need some insperation!

Layout is at a stand still. :(

    I use floquil polly scale
    acrylics with no primer.

I was told that if you need
a primer coat use light grey
    or tan paint.

This is only my 5th paint job.
    Maybe some more experienced
    painters will know more.

    Thanks,

I use a white as a primer. It makes the model colors, to me, turn out more true. Plus, if you have a project that was built out of different color parts, it blends them in together better.

hmm...... had some polly s red oxide primer i tried to shoot a couple of coil cars and a 23 shell with last night. kept having problems with it wanting to "spatter". i may have had it a little thin in the airbrush, after i added some more it worked better but it still didn't end up very smooth at all. i'm using one of the el-cheapo testors aircan brushes (i know i should get something better, just my hobby budget has been spent elsewhere and i figured if i could get a decent job w/ that, i'd upgrade). it was a little cool outside, and i thought that might have slowed the drying down some. any ideas what i did wrong???? thanks!!

I ruined a couple tips by pulling them apart,
it was splatter city after that.

    loco,
this one doesn't really have any disassembly in it, but i might see if i can get a replacement top and try it. i had done a lot of weathering and dull coating using testors paint and it had performed beautifully, no spatter, no running, nothing. this is the first time i had used anything besides testors, so i wasn't sure. on the bottle it says dilute 10-15% with distilled water or alcohol. so are they meaning add 10-15% of water or thin it out to 10-15% of original paint consistency???? thanks!

This is the reason for using plenty of Micro-Sol or Solvaset. It basically 'welds' the decal to the paint. I always use about 2-3 applications, and that really settles them down over details, and such as well. The decals that take the most applications to do are the long hood end stripes on Rio Grande diesels... Generally 5-6 applications, with popping bubbles and such, to get the decal settled down the right way.

    Beast,

    I would think 85-90% paint
    and 10-15% thinner.

Now I'm getting some splatter again.

    New question.

    PSI for PollyScale??????
    PSI for ModelFlex??????

I had been using 20 PSI.

    Thanks,

I have never thinned the modelflex paint as it is thin as it is. I have never used polly S before but am about to use it on my current project.

    I use 30 PSI when I paint
