Been doing some upgrading (a layout is NEVER complete) around Caliente. Here's what it looked like originally: And now - not finished by a long shot. The road runs up to the cell tower out of view to the left. There is actually road underneath the tree canopy if anyone cares to look... And a different angle: There were a few things I DIDN'T like about the original, high among them the road and lot color. This is an example where you think about things for a long time, then execute. More to come.
Looks pretty awesome either way Jim! But I do like your desire to fine tune everything more to your liking!
I can understand how the crews got the new road in, but the trees moving around. Are we sure we're not in Fanghorn Forest and those are really Ents? :cute: Love the change, Jim!
Looks awesome! Yep....even scenery is always subject to change.....and as seen here, ususally ends up an improvement.
Thanks, everyone. Bear in mind that's just the first of the detailing for the area. I had to wait for some material from a supplier (now in hand) to continue. Now it's just a question of finding the time!
A bunch more details at Caliente: And a slightly different angle; there's more to come in this area, including something completely different (for me, anyway...).
Just saying Hi and asking a question... Came across your thread, can I just say...wow! Great work you've done on your layout. Modeling my two favorite railroads too, love the two-mainline set style of track work. You've given me some ideas and tips to help with my own layout, so thanks. PS: I was wondering what your Locomotive Rooster is? BNSF-UP wise. numbers and types of engines? If you don't mind me asking and if someone already has, sorry.
Thanks for the kind words! GOOD question, and no one has ever asked! The Caliente area I've been working on for some time has now been finished. Here's an overall view: Here's a closer view of the upper end of the road: You've got to look to see that gate - and the road extends into the trees about a foot. Doesn't matter no one can see in there, I know it's there!
Jim, You have Holsteins grazing in the fields, that is not a California practice when it comes to dairy cattle, but it does remind me of my grandfathers farm in New York! Your layout has the advantage of looking like Upstate New York if the golden brown is changed to green in this scene! Still, just jaw dropping admiration of your work!
David, thanks for the kind words... I wouldn't know a Holstein from a Ferengi...what color SHOULD they be?
Thanks, George! I agree. In fact, I've done something here at Caliente I've wanted to try for a long time - it's just hinted at in these pix, more next week. I'm REALLY happy with the way it's turned out. All except for those Ferengi cows...anyone know what kind of cows should be here? Angus beef?
I would think beef cattle of some sort...free range herefords maybe...brownish in color...just my thought http://www.freestockphotos.biz/stockphoto/10200
Most free range grazing is usually Black Angus with some of the Hereford in this area. I am not saying that what you have needs to change, I like it a lot. Dairy farming in California is done using massive feed lots and the cattle never leave the lot. And that is a sad thing. And the only reason I comment on this is because the scene looks just like a section of my grandfathers farm. I know the breeds, because in my family, you were either a Naval Officer or a dairy farmer. And growing up you had to learn about the farm, how to farm and the breeds. I opted the non farm route. Do not change a thing, it is still just great to see and remember what used to be!
