"bump" I wanted to know if this is still on a burner someplace. I would still be interested in getting one of these cars. Curtis
It's on simmer here but seemed to be getting rather contentuous so I figured it might be better to let it 'cool' for "a while". "A while" has passed. We'd still be interested in fronting this and distributing to other dealers. If 'the board's' administrators have other or better ideas that's fine too.
If a car, seems as though the easiest bet would be one that spanned a long period of time in real RR service. So the largest number of us could make use of it. Such as box car. If a car cannot be decided upon, then the decal option seems fair. But then you can have some disparity, as car lettering styles changed over the years. Boxcab E50
Box cars lost their roofwalks and ladders where covered hoppers did not. Then there are open hoppers and gondolas (which have less room for lettering and logos). The only thing that seems to change on some of them is the truck bearings. I vote for an open hopper. Two bay, three bay....whatever.
Inasmuch as I'd like a car, I would prefer decals so I could apply them to a boxcar or two on my layout (HO scale, by the way..... ). May also be cheaper, too.
Bill board eh hmmmm, if this wasn't a "train board" I'd say yes. But now that you mention that, the boxcars of yesteryear with the big commercal ads on them seem appropriate. But I have a few conversations going with staff members trying to iron this idea out.. and hopefully will have an answer for you one way or another.
...just in case you would use decals to decorate the forum car I would recommend a covered hopper with an even surface. it's easier to apply the decals... ...just my two rappen !
I agree with the covered hoppers. Just an idea but maybe provide the decals separately. Then a modler could paint the car and apply decales afterward. Problem: If you provide decal sets will people just want them and not the cars?
I was experimenting with my own TrainBoard car this weekend and this is what I came up with. The possibilities are just about endless with these and all the discussion last week got me thinking so...... I know boxes and hoppers were top of the list. but cabooses are just one of my favorites. I thought about a stock car that someone suggested because it was covered with "boards" but then it dawned on me that those things were commonly loaded with bull. Didn't really want to go down that road. Besides, that's not this board or it's contributers at all. Jim [ 17. January 2005, 23:37: Message edited by: J Starbuck ]
I think a decal sheet would be the way to go, that way people can run waht they want be it hopper, boxcar, caboose etc. Maybe then we can show our efforts on here? whoppit
ok, i just voted. looks like boxcar is ahead by a little (took me six months). any takers out there in the car customizing world?? it has been six months. i'll take a couple of what ever. JIM, i'll take a couple of thos cabooses. respectfully david
I originally voted for the covered hopper(we've all got enough box cars). Now I'm jumping on the decal train. I'd definately be up for purchasing an official Trainboard decal set, but since my name's not Steve( ) I don't think I'd be able to create my own. Is there a volunteer out there that will help out with that part as requested above? And if the decals are produced, will there be some sort of guideline for the different types of cars or should it be left to our imaginations?
