The quality of what's been posted here so far is just stellar. You guys are all pushing and inspiring me to do more (smile - if not for the great SNFF pictures here, I'd just sit on my behind and stay at my current level).

Anyway, this week I've been working on other projects: Sometime Monday or Tuesday, I'll post a whole set of shots taken on Friday night 11/5/04, of the Allegheny and Western HO club layout of the West Island Model RR Club, Farmingdale, Long Island, New York. It's a great great layout, watch for the thread.

So for SNFF tonight, I'm posting some oldies. From about 1 year ago (December 2003):

Here are a few photos of the IHC Lehigh & New England 0-8-0 switcher I have been working on. I changed the number, added numbers to the sand dome and the rear of the tender. I also added window glazing, an engineer. Lastly I weathered both the tender and locomotive. I still have a few details to add such as a fireman.

The elevator is just a private elevator that I freelanced as a mix of a couple of prototypes. Capacity on the main two tracks is approx 10 cars (at least of the Atlas PS4427 type). The elevator is the main industry on the layout and pretty much takes up half the layout - it is over 6.5 feet long on a 15.5 foot long layout. Haven't settled on a name for the elevator yet, but it will be private, not a "big name" company.

    Cheers

    Nick,

I went and took a couple of shots of my grain terminal which looks pretty similar to yours.

My model is an Overland Brass import. I just love these engines! I also have two GP60's, one renumbered to represent the last Santa Fe one I operated, #4030. :D
I am hoping LL does a good job on these!

Colonel - nice job! Its BIG! What did you use for the silos? 1" pipe? I used 4" on mine.

    Cheers!

Colonel is in N scale and Nick is in HO scale, I think. The size of Nick's project is much larger than mine and a little larger than Colonel's, IIRC. Mine is only three feet long (one meter) and has 54 silos, 27 in two rows. It is N scale and is indeed one inch (2.54 cm) PVC pipes. I still need to complete the loading facility at the front.

Colonel's facility is almost twice as large as my Texas Grain Company.

This facility hides an access hatch behind it.

Flash - my elevator is in O scale, hence the 4" pipe! In HO I would have used 2".

The elevator in the photo is 78" (6 feet 6 inches) long, the silos are 28" (2 feet 4 inches) tall and the headhouse is 36" (3 feet) tall. In other words - it's big!!! Especially when you consider my layout is only 15.5 feet long... Still, since the beginning of the plan, the elevator was always going to be THE structure/industry on the layout, everything else was planned around it. As a result, the elevator had to have a presence to it, which it certainly does! With the layout sitting at around 52" off the ground, the headhouse almost touches the ceiling as you can see in the picture.

    Cheers!

    Nick:

You are so right about dominating the layout! Really big and a chance for some good detail in HO. When I was building mine, I visited Ft Worth and saw one of the really big ones up there. I estimate it had over 400 silos. There is no way to create something like that on the layout. Some of those grain facilities are gigantic!!

Hey Flash, that's O scale, not HO! But in O scale you can do even more detailing than HO [IMG]

    Cheers
