That looks fantastic- I had not been on this thread for a while and was just catching up and I'm real impressed by how that came out, you have certainly captured the look and feel of a hard working SD40-2!

My wife likes to go to garage sales I don't but she dragged me along on tue cause there was one on our street she wanted to check it out for toys for our son, like we need any more toys for him his room is so full of toys. Anyway I was so mad to be dragged along that I went to the back to a table and I was going thru some stuff and boxes and came across three yes three Kato SD40 U.P.'s in a box full of useless books and I was like great just my luck I lost my job and now this a few tempting locos that I can't even afford. So just out of curiosity I asked the lady how much she said I know nothing about those they where my late husbands. I was like sorry to hear about your husband's passing and she said thank you, I see you want those toys make me an offer so I was thinking no way did she just call these locos TOYS I want these so I made an offer to her of seventy dollars and she said sold I was like are you kidding and she said I have no use for them anyway they are just collecting dust so I asked do you have anymore train stuff and she said she sold all other stuff I could not believe my luck three I mean three U.P. Kato SD40's for seventy dollars wow. Now my wife said NO at first but I told her one of these go for seventy dollars new and two of them are the new release in the green box and one is an older release in the blue box and she said I don't care if the pope made these you don't need to spend seventy dollars on some toys and I got so mad I said quit calling them toys cause they are not. After a lot of pleading I finally had three new U.P. Kato SD40's. I'm starting to like garage sales. Now I have four of these great little locos. Now I see why some people go to garage sales and then sell the stuff they find there on ebay. :D

THAT'S A LOW PRICE.. I KNOW. I could not believe it myself I had to pinch myself just to make sure it was not a dream just kidding. I got to tell you I was sweating on the way home cause I didn't know if they worked or not but they run just fine. In fact I can lash up all four of my U.P. Kato SD40's now and the run at the same speed in DC.

Yeah, I didn't secure everything tightly 'cause I have to disassemble them again to install number boards. Hopefully I'll be able to get a better light seal when I reassemble them.

Just wanted to say it was pretty big of you to do what you did. This Widow had absolutely no clue what these were worth. You probably could have pulled out a 20 dollar bill and walked away with all three.

    Kudos to you.

I didn't wanna rip her off. I just offered the seventy dollars cause I didn't know if the locos where functional and neither did she. So I tough seventy dollars was a fair start for three locos I knew nothing about.

Here is my new loco! It has less than an hours run time on it (or rather it did yesterday when I got it) and I bought it for a cool $185 off a guy on N Scale Yard Sale with free shipping! And sorry for the crappy cell phone pics, but it was all I had at the time.

Got a second Intermountain F3A in NYC which was still listed at my "local" (i.e. German) dealer.
Did Intermountain make a re-run of them, or are these still the original batch?

The only problem: I just discovered that the right front window is missing, I have no clue whether it was never in or fell out recently, or when I put some grease in the drive and changed the back coupler to Unimate. I sent a nice mail to Intermountain asking for a new window, if this will be no success, I'll try to make one from plastic box lid.
